BREAKING: Jarren Duran Re-Signs Red Sox, Commits to Finish Career in Boston Red…See more
As they keep looking, the Boston Red Sox may end up going in some unsettling places in their quest for their white whale.
The Red Sox’s lack of right-handed hitters has been noticeable since the middle of last season. Their disastrous trade deadline acquisition of Danny Jansen was a direct result of this, and they will be using it to their advantage in the next free agency and trade markets this winter.
While it’s widely acknowledged that the Red Sox could use a right-handed bat, the team already features multiple long-serving lefties who would be tough to replace. The Red Sox are in a bind now that Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman, two of the best right-handed pitchers available, start at right field.
Recently, Zach Pressnell of FanSided went into depth on this problem. Arenado has been nominated to the All-Star team ten times and has won gold medals eight times; nonetheless, Pressnell suggested that the Red Sox would have to trade first baseman Triston Casas in order to acquire him.
“If the Cardinals take on around $30 million or $35 million of the remaining $52 million, Boston could be more willing to take the risk on the veteran third baseman,” according to Pressnell.
As a result, they would be free to trade Casas to the Seattle Mariners for a starting pitcher like George Kirby or Luis Castillo… When it all comes together, pitcher Dylan Cease has Cy Young potential, and Casas might be a crucial component in a trade for him.
