JUST IN: Boston Red Sox yet again fortify their bullpen with $200 million franchise-changing star

Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman remains unsigned in free agency, despite strong interest from several teams. Reports suggest that teams like the New York Yankees and the Astros are no longer in the running for his services.

However, many other teams are still competing for the star player. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently highlighted the Boston Red Sox as one of the “most likely destinations” for Bregman. With Bregman reportedly seeking a contract nearing $200 million, Boston may need to meet that price to secure him.

Miller pointed out that among the interested teams, Detroit has the greatest need for Bregman’s defensive abilities and right-handed bat. But if the Tigers aren’t willing to meet his contract demands, Bregman could land with the Mets, Red Sox, or Blue Jays, all of which have larger payrolls.

While Toronto is the least likely due to its recent addition of Anthony Santander and a potential luxury-tax threshold, it’s still a possibility. If Bregman is open to playing second base, the Red Sox could be the top contender outside of Detroit.

Boston, which reportedly made a bid worth at least $700 million for Juan Soto, has the financial capacity to compete in the Bregman race. Adding him would be a major boost for the franchise, as the versatile infielder could play multiple infield positions.

With recent acquisitions like Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, signing Bregman would be a strong move to further strengthen the Red Sox roster.
