Ryan Day Addresses NFL Speculation Following Ohio State’s Championship Victory
“Right now the impact we can make…
The Ohio State Buckeyes won the College Football Playoff national championship game with a victory over Notre Dame on Monday, January 20. Since then, the celebrations have continued for Ohio State, although several players left for the NFL draft and via the transfer portal.
Another big loss was defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who surprisingly departed Columbus and took the same job with the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Nonetheless, the future is still bright for Ohio State, especially with five-star quarterback Julian Sayin and star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day silenced all the hot seat rumblings that surfaced after the November 30 loss to Michigan. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day.
On the other hand, some have wondered if Day would consider going back to the NFL. Well, Day hopped on “The Steam Room” podcast with Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley and addressed the question of whether he would return to the NFL. “I would never wanna say, ‘I would never consider it,’ because you don’t know how things can change,” Day said. “I was in the NFL for two years and had a great experience there and it’s a great league. But right now the impact we can make on young people is, to me, more impactful in college. That’s why I got into this game is to do that and that’s what I want to do.” Day also mentioned Woody Hayes, who was the last head coach to win multiple championships at Ohio State.
Day began his coaching career in college and was an assistant from 2002 until 2014, making stops at New Hampshire, Boston College, Florida and Temple. Then, he spent time as the QB coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and then as the QB coach for the San Francisco 49ers before going to Ohio State.
Ohio State is widely viewed as a top-2 team for next season, even with a ton of players departing. So, while there might be some discussions about Day wanting to go back to the NFL, the Ohio State coach doesn’t appear to be thinking about that at the moment.
