In a heartfelt appeal, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor has expressed his deep desire for teammate Pete Alonso to remain with the team, while also urging fans to exercise patience during Alonso’s free agency deliberations. Lindor emphasized that Alonso has “earned the right” to explore his options and maximize his value in the market.
Reflecting on Alonso’s contributions, Lindor stated, “Pete should maximize this moment because he’s worked so hard. He’s going to have to make this decision himself as to where he wants to go. At the end of the day, he should do what’s best for him and his family – whether that’s with the Mets or somebody else.”
Alonso, a cornerstone of the Mets’ lineup, has been instrumental in the team’s successes over the past six seasons, amassing 226 home runs and becoming a fan favorite. His leadership was particularly evident when he addressed the team during an impromptu meeting following Lindor’s injury in September 2024, passionately urging his teammates to stay focused on their playoff aspirations.
The Mets’ front office, led by owner Steve Cohen, has been candid about the challenges in negotiating a new contract with Alonso. Cohen acknowledged the team’s preparedness to move forward without Alonso if an agreement cannot be reached, stating, “I don’t like the negotiations. I don’t like what’s been presented to us… If it stays this way, I think we’re going to have to get used to the fact that we might have to go forward with the existing players that we have.”
Despite the uncertainties, Lindor remains hopeful for Alonso’s return, recognizing the significant impact he has both on and off the field. He conveyed his support by texting Alonso to let him know he was thinking about him during these challenging times.
As Alonso navigates his free agency, Lindor’s message underscores the respect and camaraderie within the Mets organization. Fans are encouraged to remain patient and supportive, understanding that such decisions are complex and deeply personal. Regardless of the outcome, Alonso’s contributions to the Mets have been invaluable, and his legacy within the team will endure.
