Alex Bregman’s $200 Million Sweepstakes Likely Down To 5 Contending Teams
Alex Bregman is one of the top free agents left on the market this winter. Bregman and Pete Alonso of the New York Mets are the clear top talents left after players like Anthony Santander and Juan Soto signed their contracts. Bregman’s free agency sweepstakes has been a complete roller-coaster ride this winter.
He seemed favored to go back to the Houston Astros at the beginning of the offseason, but the two sides couldn’t come to a deal. With that in mind, the door has been left open for a few other teams to enter the Bregman sweepstakes.
At this point, there are likely only five teams left in the Bregman sweepstakes: the Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Detroit Tigers. The Astros are likely the favorites to land Bregman. He seems to want to return to Houston and the Astros seemingly want him back as well. If Bregman was going to sign with another team, it likely would have landed him by now.
The Red Sox have the money to give the star third baseman a huge deal, but it doesn’t seem like they want to venture close to $200 million. The same can be said for the Blue Jays, who have landed a few other players in free agency this winter.
The Tigers were a favorite in this race for a while, but with the negotiations reportedly stalling, there’s no reason to believe Detroit will steal the star from Houston. If the Tigers were going to offer a deal over the Astros’ reported $156 million offer, they would have by now.
The Cubs are the dark horse in this race because they’ve recently emerged as a suitor. Chicago has turned its franchise from a potential laughing stock to a serious National League contender in a few moves. Adding Bregman would be the cherry, albeit a very expensive one, on top of a successful offseason.
Tigers’ Interest in Alex Bregman After Latest Free Agency Signing Revealed
The MLB free agency period has slowed down considerably in recent weeks after the Los Angeles Dodgers signed pitchers Roki Sasaki and Tanner Scott.
One of the biggest names remaining on the market is former Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman. The two-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner has been linked to several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and the Astros. A report came out that both the Astros and Red Sox stood pat on their respective offers, and the Tigers had still been lingering as an option.
On Sunday night, the Tigers struck an agreement with former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty on a two-year, $35 million deal. Flaherty, who the Tigers traded to the Dodgers at the 2024 deadline, now returns to Detroit in a big move for the American League Central contenders.
After Flaherty’s deal was announced, some speculation arose that the Tigers would be out on the Bregman sweepstake
