LATEST NEWS: Just In Understand Free Agent Baseman To Land With The Red Sox ‘Soon’

Boston Red Sox pitchers and catchers are due to report to spring training by Wednesday, with position players arriving five days later.

On Monday, a longtime ESPN baseball insider fueled speculation that Alex Bregman, one of the top free agents still unsigned, could be among those reporting on Feb. 17.

Bregman is the last major free agent to remain without a deal. Reports suggest he has held out for a contract worth at least six years and $200 million. ESPN MLB expert Buster Olney noted that Bregman might be close to signing before spring training or shortly thereafter.

Olney predicted that Bregman, a key player for two Houston Astros World Series champions (2017, 2022) and seven AL West Division title winners in his nine-year career, could soon join the Red Sox, Cubs, or Tigers, although sources from the Astros are skeptical he’ll return to Houston.

The Cubs, however, may not be in the mix. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that the Cubs are unlikely to offer more than a three-year deal, while the Red Sox and Tigers are reportedly offering at least four years.

In Boston, Olney suggested Bregman could transition to second base, a position of need for the Red Sox, while Rafael Devers holds down third base under a 10-year, $313.5 million contract. However, the Tigers are also contenders, with Olney noting that signing Bregman would signal their commitment to a “win-now” approach.
