BREAKING NEWS: Red Sox Named Potential Trade Destination for All-Star Closer

The Boston Red Sox made significant moves this offseason to strengthen their pitching staff, acquiring frontline starters Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet. They also reinforced their bullpen by signing hard-throwing left-hander Aroldis Chapman and right-hander Liam Hendriks. However, the departure of closer Kenley Jansen in free agency leaves some uncertainty about who will handle the ninth inning. As of now, Chapman appears to be the likely closer, but Boston may seek a high-impact trade for a star reliever as the season progresses.

According to Bleacher Report’s “Top 10 Players Most Likely to be Traded,” the Red Sox are a potential suitor for St. Louis Cardinals’ two-time All-Star closer Ryan Helsley. Helsley, one of the game’s top closers, led the league with 49 saves in 2024 and has maintained an impressive 1.83 ERA since 2022, striking out 225 batters over 167.2 innings. While health remains a key factor, the Cardinals are in a rebuilding phase, and if Helsley can stay on the field for at least half the season, he will be one of the most sought-after relievers on the trade market. Boston has the prospect depth to make a deal happen and could even part with an MLB-ready young player to acquire him.

If the Red Sox aim to contend beyond the regular season—a goal evident from their aggressive offseason—they must ensure the closer role is solidified and not a recurring issue.
