Danielle Jonas Opens Up About Lyme Disease Diagnosis After Being Misdiagnosed with Anxiety: “I Knew Something Wasn’t Right”

Danielle Jonas, wife of Kevin Jonas and star of Married to Jonas, is opening up about a deeply personal health battle that was long misunderstood: her Lyme disease diagnosis. In a candid interview with People, Danielle revealed that for months she dealt with unexplained symptoms that were repeatedly dismissed or misdiagnosed — including hair loss, scalp eczema, and exhaustion. Doctors initially told her it was just anxiety. But Danielle knew something more serious was going on.

The 37-year-old mother of two said she first noticed troubling changes when she started losing hair at the top of her head — something she had never experienced before. Her scalp became inflamed, flaky, and painful, leading to self-consciousness and discomfort. “It’s hard because people think it’s just about looks,” Danielle shared. “But when it’s your skin, your scalp — and no one can tell you why it’s happening — it affects your self-esteem, your mood, everything.”

For months, Danielle struggled without answers. Despite seeing multiple doctors, she was continually told that stress and anxiety were likely the root cause. But instinctively, she knew there was more to the story.

It wasn’t until she visited a functional medicine specialist that Danielle finally received a diagnosis: Lyme disease — a tick-borne illness that can be notoriously hard to detect and even harder to diagnose, especially when symptoms mimic other conditions. “Hearing it was Lyme disease actually made me feel validated,” she explained. “I finally had a name for what I was feeling — and a path forward.”

Lyme disease can present in many different ways, from fatigue and rashes to neurological symptoms, muscle aches, and skin disorders. Danielle’s experience highlights a growing issue many women face: having their symptoms minimized or dismissed altogether.

In the interview, Danielle shared how the condition has affected her both physically and emotionally. “There were days I didn’t feel like myself. I was tired, emotional, and frustrated that no one believed what I was experiencing.”

Now that she’s undergoing treatment, Danielle says she’s starting to feel better, but recovery is a process. “Some days are good, and others are still hard,” she admitted. “But I’m learning to listen to my body.”

Her husband Kevin Jonas has been a strong support system throughout her health journey. The couple, who share two daughters — Alena and Valentina — have leaned on each other while navigating life in the spotlight and behind closed doors. “Kevin has been amazing. He never doubted me and always encouraged me to keep pushing for answers.”

Danielle’s openness about her experience is already inspiring fans and others battling chronic illnesses. By speaking up, she hopes to raise awareness and help others advocate for themselves. “You know your body better than anyone. If something feels off — don’t give up. Keep asking questions until someone listens.”
