Demi Moore Reveals the Awkward Truth: Why Tom Cruise Was ‘Embarrassed’ by Her Pregnancy Before Filming A Few Good Men — and How It Changed Everything Behind the Scenes

More than three decades after the release of A Few Good Men, actress Demi Moore has opened up about a surprising and awkward dynamic she experienced with co-star Tom Cruise — one that had nothing to do with the script, the courtroom drama, or the movie’s iconic “You can’t handle the truth!” line.

In a recent appearance at The New Yorker Festival, Moore reflected on what it was like preparing to shoot the 1992 legal thriller while pregnant with her second daughter, Scout Willis. She revealed that Cruise — then one of Hollywood’s biggest and most bankable stars — seemed “a bit embarrassed” about her pregnancy during pre-production, creating an atmosphere she described as “slightly uncomfortable.”

“Tom didn’t really know how to respond,” Moore admitted with a laugh. “I don’t think he meant any harm — it was just an era when a pregnant woman showing up to work on a major film was still seen as unusual.”

At the time, Moore was eight months pregnant, balancing motherhood and a demanding acting career at a level few women in Hollywood had done before. The actress recalled trying to maintain her stamina, continuing with exercise and long hikes even as her due date approached. Despite her energy and professionalism, she couldn’t ignore the discomfort it seemed to cause others on set.

“I felt completely fine,” she said. “But I could tell that Tom and some of the crew were… not sure how to act. It was new territory for them.”

The revelation has reignited conversations about how women — particularly pregnant women — have historically been treated in the entertainment industry. In the early 1990s, visible pregnancy on a film set was often seen as a liability or distraction, rather than a symbol of strength or balance. Moore’s honesty shines a light on how much has changed since then — and, perhaps, how far Hollywood still has to go.

While Cruise has not commented publicly on Moore’s remarks, the two shared strong on-screen chemistry in A Few Good Men, where Moore played Lt. Cmdr. JoAnne Galloway opposite Cruise’s cocky Navy lawyer, Lt. Daniel Kaffee. The film became an instant classic, earning four Oscar nominations and cementing both stars’ places in Hollywood history.

Looking back, Moore said the experience helped shape her understanding of the double standards women face in the industry. “I felt I had to prove that I could do it all — be a mother and have a successful career — without anyone questioning my commitment,” she explained. “Now, I realize I didn’t have to prove anything.”

Her candid reflections are earning widespread praise online, with fans applauding her for exposing the subtle biases that existed, even among Hollywood’s elite.

“Demi Moore has always been a trailblazer,” one user wrote on X. “The fact that she was working, pregnant, and fearless in the ‘90s is just incredible.”

Three decades later, her story serves as a reminder that sometimes the most powerful truths come not from the courtroom — but from the courage to speak honestly about the past.
