Sydney Sweeney’s Movie Flop Sparks Cruel Remarks About Her Body

Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney, best known for her breakout roles in Euphoria and Anyone But You, recently faced an intense wave of online criticism following the commercial disappointment of her latest film Christy — a biopic about trailblazing boxer Christy Martin. While Sweeney earned praise for her commitment to the physically demanding role, the film’s modest box-office performance has unfortunately shifted public attention toward cruel and unnecessary comments about her body.

Released in late 2024, Christy struggled to make an impact at the box office, reportedly grossing around $1.4 million during its theatrical run. Despite the poor numbers, Sweeney has stood by the project, explaining that her goal was to bring attention to Martin’s inspiring story rather than chase financial success. “This film was never about the numbers,” Sweeney said in an interview. “It was about impact — about showing what women are capable of when they push beyond limits.”

To authentically portray a professional boxer, Sweeney underwent months of intense physical training, including daily strength workouts, sparring sessions, and a complete shift in diet. She reportedly gained more than 30 pounds of muscle to embody Martin’s athletic frame. “My body completely transformed,” Sweeney told Men’s Journal. “I was so strong — like, crazy strong. My clothes didn’t fit, but I’d never felt more confident.”

However, that transformation became the target of harsh online criticism after the movie underperformed. On social media, some users mocked Sweeney’s appearance, calling her “frumpy” and “bloated,” while others made insensitive comments comparing her to “an Ozempic candidate.” The criticism intensified when several gossip accounts began amplifying the remarks.

Rumors also spread that a plus-size model had publicly criticized Sweeney’s new physique, allegedly suggesting that her “weight gain didn’t suit her Hollywood image.” Yet, no reputable source or verified statement from any model has confirmed this. The body-shaming backlash appears largely to have come from anonymous online commenters, not from any figure in the fashion industry.

In response, Sweeney took to Instagram to defend herself — not through words, but through action. She posted a montage of her grueling boxing and fitness training, showcasing the strength and discipline behind her transformation. The video, captioned simply with a boxing glove emoji, quickly went viral. Fans and celebrities flooded her comments with praise, applauding her resilience and dedication.

Many saw Sweeney’s response as a powerful statement against body-shaming in Hollywood. Entertainment outlets including People, E! News, and The New York Post highlighted her ability to turn negativity into motivation. “She’s redefining what confidence looks like,” wrote Glamour magazine. “By owning her power, Sydney Sweeney reminded everyone that strength — not size — defines beauty.”

While Christy may not have succeeded commercially, it has sparked a larger conversation about how women’s bodies are policed in the entertainment industry. For Sydney Sweeney, the experience reinforced one truth: her worth isn’t measured by box-office numbers — or by anyone else’s standards of beauty.
