Sydney Sweeney’s Movie Flop Sparks Cruel Remarks About Her Body

Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney, one of the most talked-about young stars of her generation, has once again found herself at the center of an online storm — this time, not for her performance, but for her body. Following the disappointing box-office performance of her latest film, Christy, Sweeney faced a wave of body-shaming comments online, some reportedly from self-identified plus-size influencers who accused her of “playing victim” and “chasing sympathy.”

The biopic Christy (2025) was meant to be one of Sweeney’s most ambitious projects yet. The film tells the true story of Christy Martin, the pioneering female boxer who broke barriers in a male-dominated sport. To prepare for the role, Sweeney trained extensively in boxing, cardio, and weightlifting. She reportedly gained over 30 pounds of muscle to authentically portray the athlete’s strength and power.

Despite Sweeney’s dedication, Christy struggled commercially, earning just over $1.4 million during its limited theatrical release. The film’s lukewarm box-office results led to online chatter — much of it unfairly directed at Sweeney’s appearance. Critics claimed she looked “too bulky” and “frumpy” compared to her previous glamorous Hollywood image.

Social media soon flooded with negative remarks about her body. Some comments cruelly compared her to “an Ozempic candidate,” while others mocked her for admitting that her body had changed after training. One viral post, allegedly from a plus-size model, accused Sweeney of “crying body positivity only when it suits her,” implying hypocrisy for someone who has long been celebrated as a beauty icon.

However, many fans and celebrities came to Sweeney’s defense. Actress Florence Pugh and singer Demi Lovato were among those who praised her for embracing strength over superficiality. Fans pointed out that the criticism reflected a deeper issue: the unrealistic expectations placed on women in Hollywood to look a certain way — even when a role demands transformation.

Sweeney herself addressed the backlash indirectly through an Instagram video. Instead of posting a statement, she shared a montage of her boxing sessions, weightlifting routines, and sparring matches, showing the intense work that went into her preparation. The post’s caption was simple: a boxing glove emoji — a quiet but powerful clapback to her critics.

The response was overwhelmingly supportive. Many viewers called her video “empowering,” highlighting how Sweeney’s focus on fitness and authenticity countered the toxic beauty standards that fuel body-shaming culture.

In the end, while Christy may not have been a commercial hit, Sweeney’s resilience has cemented her as a voice for strength and self-acceptance. Her message — through both her work and her silence — speaks louder than any cruel comment: a woman’s worth isn’t defined by her body, box office numbers, or anyone’s approval but her own.
