According to ESPN, Liverpool has reached an agreement to sign Benfica attacker Darwin Nunez for a fee of up to €100 million. Both teams are in advanced talks over a deal, according to ESPN, and sources have indicated that Liverpool is likely to break their transfer record to capture the striker.

Nunez will sign a five-year contract at Anfield, according to ESPN sources, and he has left the Uruguay national squad to travel to England for a physical.

Sources have told ESPN that                              an agreement was reached on Saturday between the two clubs worth €75m plus €25m in add-ons.

Liverpool have seen off competition from Manchester United and Arsenal to land the striker.

According to ESPN sources, Nunez is keen for regular Champions League football which put Liverpool ahead in the race to sign the striker.

The incoming deal could have an impact on the future of Sadio Mane who has attracted interested from Bayern Munich, with Liverpool turning down two offers from the Bundesliga champions for the forward.

Nunez, who joined Benfica in September 2020, was the top scorer in Portugal’s premier flight last season and had a strong showing in the Champions League, scoring 34 goals in 41 games.

The Uruguayan striker began his career with Penarol before going to Almeria in the Spanish second division in 2019, where he scored 16 goals in 32 games. Nunez’s transfer will result in Almeria receiving 20% of the earnings. After Liverpool’s Champions League quarterfinal match against Benfica in April, Klopp lauded Nunez, stating he is “very talented” and “has a tremendous career ahead of him.”
