‘Absolutely idiotic’ – Jamie Carragher blasts Arsenal star for ‘stupid’ mistake in Liverpool draw

Carragher shot Xhaka (not pictured) and called him out for a “stupid” mistake.

Jamie Carragher believes Granit Xhakja’s ‘stupid’ error helped Liverpool earn a point against Arsenal. He said the moment the Switzerland international was warned changed the dynamics of the game.

The Gunners led 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday April 9 but had to settle for a point after Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino netted for Liverpool. The Egyptian also had the chance to score from the penalty spot but missed his penalty for the second time this season. Speaking to Sky Sports during the game, Carragher shot Xhaka and accused him of the “stupid” mistake:

“I mean, what does he think Xhaka? Two down at Anfield, throw his arm or something at Trent. Just ridiculous. Trent reacts and then the crowd gets up; the ball is already gone. He is two-zero, moments before half-time.”

He went on to talk about the Arsenal star after the game:

“I think it did (work at Liverpool). Sounds crazy, I’m glad Xhaka did it, but I’m mad at Xhaka. I’m not an Arsenal fan, but if you were an Arsenal fan, what would you do? He is absolutely crazy. The game is in your hands; you put yourself in the game – even leading the challenge with your arm, why do it? And now that we face Trent again, the audience is outraged, and it’s absolutely idiotic of Xhaka to do that.

    He continued:

“You know what? He’s been fantastic in a slightly different role higher up the pitch this season, had a huge impact on this team, but that went back to old Xhaka. Honestly, who knows if he’ll make it; We don’t know, but it was only for an experienced player to do something like that on this pitch and in the position they were in there was only one way for Liverpool to get back into this match and it was with the help of the terraces.”

Arsenal and Manchester City have their destinies in their hands

Arsenal and Manchester City are heading into late season business while eyeing the Premier League title. Both teams are within reach of the cup but must continue to win.

The Gunners are six points clear but have played one game more than Cityzens. They need to make sure they get wins in every game, including City’s, to win the title. Pep Guardiola’s side will also be confident as they must win all remaining games and the title remains in Manchester for another season.
