The Blues won back-to-back games for the first time since March Chelsea secured a second successive Premier League win for the second time in 2023 with a 4-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Wilson Odobert gave Burnley an early lead, but Chelsea leveled themselves with an own goal from Ameen Al Dakhil just before half-time, and the Blues ran away after the break.
An inspired Raheem Sterling won a penalty taken by Cole Palmer, before the winger scored his own goal, and Nicolas Jackson scored a fourth to seal a memorable win for his side. Mauricio Pochettino.
How did the match go
The first goal came eight minutes later when Palmer turned his defender on the edge of the box, but the summer signing’s close-range effort flew high and went wide. Burnley counter-attacked sharply but lacked composure in the final third, either losing rhythm or pace and conceding too easily, even though the signs of Burnley’s threat were clear from the start.
After seeing Sterling shoot diagonally, Burnley put the pieces together and moved forward as Odobert’s low shot spilled into the bottom corner of Robert Sanchez’s goal.
The score could easily have been 2-0 as soon as Odobert’s cross caught a sleeping Levi Colwill at the far post, but the onrushing Mike Tresor was unable to direct the shot on target.
Chelsea’s reaction was slow and predictable. The Blues spent much of the first half passing from the back, while Burnley happily dealt with the long balls and crosses that inevitably followed. Just before halftime, Sterling contributed to equalizing. His cross hit Al Dakhil on the hip, his shot flew past James Trafford and into the Burnley net.
Chelsea added strength in the second half and were awarded a penalty just three minutes later when Sterling was fouled by Vitinho, and Palmer stepped up to head in from 12 yards.
Enzo Fernandez produced a masterful effort at Trafford, but Sterling was far more convincing in front of goal as he curled a shot beyond Trafford to give Chelsea the lead just after the hour mark.
Forty minutes later, substitute Jackson headed in from inside the box, marking the first time Chelsea had scored four goals in a match since April 2022.
Burnley player ratings (4-3-3)
James Trafford – 5/10 – Didn’t score a goal but was otherwise pretty good, although he didn’t always inspire confidence with the ball at his feet.
Vitinho – 4/10 – A notable weak link at the back. Vitinho gave Sterling too much space and never looked comfortable. Burned as punishment.
Ameen Al Dakhil – 5/10 – Well done but caught in the wrong position for Chelsea’s equalizer.
Hannes Delcroix – 5/10 – Did well but started to struggle as Chelsea found their footing.
Charlie Taylor – 6/10 – Had a comfortable match against a team that is rarely attacked by Chelsea.
Josh Cullen – 7/10 – Seemed to stand up to everything Chelsea threw at him. Exceptional energy and work speed to try to stop them.
Sander Berge – 4/10 – Not proud of the equalizer and offered very little going forward.
Josh Brownhill – 5/10 – Rushed into the challenge to try and shake Chelsea up. It didn’t really have the intended impact.
Mike Tresor – 5/10 – Well done and had some fun moments. He should have scored after the first game.
Lyle Foster – 6/10 – His movement causes real problems for Disasi and Silva. Appeared with an assist to open the scoring for Odobert but faded after the break.
Wilson Odobert – 6/10 – Currently the youngest scorer for Burnley in the Premier League. Odobert posed a major threat to Chelsea and could have easily scored another goal in a lively first half.

Chelsea player ratings (4-2-3-1)
Robert Sanchez – 5/10 – Odobert’s attack doesn’t look particularly powerful but still manages to get past him.
Marc Cucurella – 5/10 – Poor position to score the first goal. He tries to kick himself out by hitting Odobert. Luckily he wasn’t tackled but received a well-deserved yellow card.
Axel Disasi – 5/10 – Great pass from the back but poor one-on-one defending for the first goal. Overall a bit of a slow day.
Thiago Silva – 5/10 – With limited pace, Silva cannot get out of position these days. He abandoned his comrades on an island for Odobert’s cause.
Levi Colwill – 6/10 – His work rate is exceptional, even if his final product is a bit unsatisfactory.
Moises Caicedo – 8/10 – Best midfielder at Chelsea. Be discreetly productive, take back ownership, and nurture your creative teammates. A truly destructive power.
Enzo Fernandez – 6/10 – Tried to shake things up but was a bit slow with the ball.
Cole Palmer – 7/10 – This wasn’t Palmer’s best game but he still finished with a goal and an assist. He seemed to be in the right place.
Conor Gallagher – 6/10 – Present as usual but didn’t get much on the ball before assisting Sterling for the third goal.
Raheem Sterling – 9/10 – A real spark for Chelsea. He deserved his chance from the own goal before showing his quality to win the penalty and score his own goal. He pulled his side through this.
Armando Broja – 4/10 – Tried his best to get involved but couldn’t find his way into the match before getting sucked in at the interval.

Raheem Sterling (Chelsea)
