Cody Gakpo reacts to Man Utd’s victory and two goals: “Fantastic!”
Cody Gakpo reflected on a ‘fantastic’ afternoon for himself and Liverpool, who beat Manchester United 7-0 on Sunday.
The Dutch striker scored twice at Anfield against fierce rivals the Reds, opening the scoring late in the first half to make it 3-0 shortly after the break.
Forwards Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah also achieved groupings, with the latter becoming the club’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League.
After the match, Gakpo spoke to Sky Sports to share his reaction to a memorable day at work – he reads on for the interview…
To victory… Everyone has told me a lot about this match before, so I knew it’s an important match for the club, for the fans and also for ourselves in the situation we are in. We were very motivated and when we have a concert like this, it’s great.
On the Reds’ performance in the second half…
I think we were just determined, keen to keep going, keep putting pressure on them, keep scoring goals when we had the chance. In the end we had enough chances and luck was on everyone’s side today, so it’s fantastic and we managed to score seven. But there are also things to improve and we just have to keep going for the next games and keep winning the games.
On Andy Robertson’s assist for his first goal…
It was wonderful. I was on the side, even he said to me: “Put yourself in the back. Then I raced, he made a brilliant pass, I just had to take a touch inside. We practiced something like that a lot in training, so it’s good that you’re shooting something like that. On his frontline role…
It’s obviously a new front three, except for Mo, so it’s always a bit difficult to find yourself at the beginning because the [previous] three – Sadio, Bobby and Mo – were very used to playing together. Then it’s a new formation, you have time to adapt and I think we’ll get there. We just have to keep improving, keep going, keep working hard and everything will be fine.
Which of his goals is his favorite… I liked it second best. The most important was the first.
