DAVID MOYES CONFIRMS HOWARD WEDD TALK AFTER LIVERPOOL PENALTY CONTROVER

David Moyes has revealed PGMOL boss Howard Webb called him up after his West Ham United side were denied a late penalty in a 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.

In the twilight of the game, the Hammers were offended by a controversial call from the VAR. Reds midfielder Thiago appeared to be handling the ball inside the box, but referee Chris Kavanagh waved off. Despite Moyes’ pleas on the sideline, the referee was not asked to consult the on-field monitor.

Liverpool eventually kept three crucial points and the West Ham boss was furious during his post-match press conference. He said: “What do I think of the referee? Not so much. I only had one chance to watch it, and I didn’t get a chance to see it until I spoke to the referee.

Well, when you go for the ball, you know that if you go for it and lose control of the tackle, it’s your fault. You can break your fall by sliding down and putting your arm down, but he rushed the ball. I think it’s a penalty.

“I think the most difficult thing is the lack of respect from VAR. At least that VAR hadn’t said look, those are the ones who say they don’t think it’s a close decision.

“A lot of football people have seen a lot worse (decisions made on handball) lately. Someone at VAR didn’t have enough football knowledge to know he was close. Whoever did it chose not to send the referee.

“They have to apologize to the football team. We have to collect points to say in the Premier League.”

Before the Hammers’ trip through the capital to Crystal Palace on Saturday, Moyes was asked if he had heard from the referees and if he had received the apology he wanted.

And the former Everton manager told reporters that PGMOL chief referee Webb had contacted him.
Moyes said: “I spoke to Howard Webb and the team about him. So yes, I did. The conversation was private and will remain so.”

As promised by Jurgen Klopp in his latest pre-match press conference, Ibrahima Konate returned to training on Friday and is available for selection on Sunday. However, some older players weren’t represented in the Reds’ latest training session. After suffering a bad blow to the back against West Ham, Diogo Jota was absent from the latest photos, with Klopp admitting earlier today that he will need to be judged.

Meanwhile, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara were also unrepresented but that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t be available for selection on Sunday.

Naby Keita was also absent from the latest training photos, despite Klopp’s suggestions that he could return to training on Friday, while Roberto Firmino and Stefan Bajcetic were also absent, as expected.
