Manchester United are thought to be closing in on a deal to sign Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
Are Man United signing Sofyan Amrabat?
The Red Devils have bolstered Erik ten Hag’s squad this summer by already bringing in Mason Mount from Chelsea and goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan.
A new striker is also on the way to Old Trafford in Rasmus Hojlund. Serie A side Atalanta have been holding out for a cash-only deal, and the two clubs have struck a deal in the region of around €70m. Hojlund has agreed on a five-year deal in Manchester and is set to undergo a medical and finalise a transfer on Tuesday.
Another player who has been heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils is Amrabat. The 26-year-old previously worked under Ten Hag at FC Utrecht, making 50 appearances under the Dutchman, contributing to 11 goals, and with Amrabat into the final 12 months of his Fiorentina deal, a reunion could be on the cards.
Personal terms were agreed over a move to Old Trafford early last month, and by the looks of things, a deal is close.
The Faithful MUFC relayed an update from The Mirror regarding Man United and Amrabat. The report claims that the club are closing in on a £26m agreement to sign the midfielder and is expected to arrive to bolster Ten Hag’s option in the middle of the park and take pressure off key man Casemiro. It is added that if a deal can be concluded this week, then Fred could soon be on his way out.
Who is Sofyan Amrabat?
Amrabat is primarily a defensive midfielder who can also play in a box-to-box central role if needed. The Morocco international has been with Fiorentina since 2020 and appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high €30m Transfermarkt valuation, a figure which has rocketed following last year’s World Cup in Qatar.
Dubbed a “monster” in the centre of the pitch by reporter Carlo Garganese, he caught the eye after helping Morocco reach the semi-finals and was praised by former England manager Fabio Capello.
“If I have to name one name, besides the well-known Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi, it would be Amrabat. He is essential for balance and a great runner. I read that he covered more than fourteen kilometres against Spain. I see him as the Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco.”
The Nike-sponsored midfielder has plied his trade in the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy during his career, making more than 250 senior club appearances.
Capped by his country on 49 occasions, Amrabat appears to be in his prime and is a player who Ten Hag already knows, even if it was earlier in his career, so a transfer could prove to be a shrewd one, especially with Champions League football back at Old Trafford next season.
A quality in-depth squad could help United build on a positive first year under Ten Hag, and it looks as if Amrabat is on his way to Manchester to provide competition and potentially play alongside Casemiro.

In an official statement, the club said: “Manchester United can confirm that Kobbie Mainoo suffered an ankle injury during the match against Real Madrid on Tour 2023. The midfielder is expected to be ruled out for the first part of the 2023/24 season. He has flown home to the UK where further assessment of his injury will take place before a medical decision on the next steps.”
Fabrizio Romano Issues Update on New Midfielder Search After Mainoo Set-Back
With the teenager set to be out for the foreseeable future, Fabrizio Romano has stated that United “will push” for the signing of a new midfielder in the next few weeks. It’s added that Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is high on their list of possible targets amid reports that he has already agreed to join the Premier League heavyweights.
United have already signed one midfielder in the form of Mason Mount and given him their coveted No.7 shirt, an indication that he will be a regular starter going forward. Erik ten Hag’s side have now also reportedly secured a new striker in Atalanta man Rasmus Hojlund, another strong sign of intent ahead of the new season.
The Old Trafford outfit appear to be keen on improving their depth in midfield after the blow to Mainoo, who was one of their star players in the pre-season friendly games against Arsenal and Lyon. Amrabat, who was hailed as an “extraordinary player” by Luis Enrique after Morocco’s win over Spain at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, seems to be one of their primary midfield targets but it remains to be seen if they can sign him before the Premier League season begins.

The Red Devils slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in their latest pre-season friendly in Houston, where it was apparent that Erik ten Hag’s side are in desperate need of a new striker.
Ten Hag admitted as much after the game, revealing the club are “working 24/7” on addressing the issue, and United’s current priority is finalising the capture of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, whom they made a £51.4m bid for on Wednesday.
PSG are also interested in the highly-rated Dane, but Ten Hag has stressed the importance of United completing their transfer business before the new Premier League season begins. Crucially, Hojlund’s preference is to head to Old Trafford.
90min confirmed earlier this month that United were also looking to address some issues in central midfield, and had opened talks with Fiorentina over Amrabat, who helped his club reach the final of last season’s Europa Conference League and was a standout player for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup.
Those talks are continuing to be held, 90min understands, although United do not have a clear run at Amrabat’s signature.
La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid are also interested in signing a new defensive midfielder and have him on a three-player shortlist of targets alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Marco Verratti – though the latter now seems destined to join Al Hilai in Saudi Arabia.

United are also working hard on moving on some of their squad players, and progress is being made in regards to selling Fred to Turkish giants Galatasaray.
The Brazilian’s departure would free up valuable room on United’s wage bill, and after an opening bid from Gala was turned down, negotiations are ongoing between the two parties.
Sources have told 90min there’s a confidence of that deal eventually being agreed, which is a key factor in United progressing their move for Amrabat.
United have already signed Mason Mount and Andre Onana in big-money deals this summer – moves made to strengthen United’s squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.

The Red Devils will take on Spanish side Athletic Club in Dublin on Sunday August 6, a week before the start of the Premier League season.
They are also set to play Leeds, Lyon, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund throughout pre-season.

Sheikh Jassim bid to ‘remain live’
Despite the self-imposed deadline for Sheikh Jassim’s bid, it appears that the offer will remain on the table for the foreseeable future.
According to The Guardian, the Qatari will not fully walk away even if he doesn’t hear back. His offer, that is reportedly below the Glazers’ £6bn asking price, will remain live beyond today.
