Fabinho faces a two-game ban from Liverpool due to Premier League rule
Liverpool midfielder Fabihno hangs out on a tightrope ahead of Nottingham Forest visit
Liverpool midfielder Fabinho faces a two-game ban and could face the penalty if booked for Saturday’s encounter with Nottingham Forest.
In Monday’s dominant win over Leeds United, the Brazilian received his ninth booking of the season after a cynical foul on United States international Brenden Aaronson. Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota each scored two goals, while Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez added to the scoring list.
Victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side sparks a glimmer of hope in their hopes of European qualification next season as they break the pace currently held by Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
Steve Cooper’s side travel to Anfield this weekend to complete a league double against the Reds after picking up a surprise victory at the City Ground earlier in the season. After the visit of the team in danger of relegation, Liverpool travel to East London to face West Ham.
But at Saturday’s meeting, Fabinho will have to drag the line with match officials so as to avoid retroactive action and miss the next two games against the Hammers and then Spurs.
Premier League rules state that players who collect 10 yellow cards in league matches up to and including their team’s 32nd match will serve a two-match league ban.
Michael Oliver is the referee this weekend and booked the 29-year-old during last season’s 1-1 draw with Antonio Conte’s Tottenham. In four Premier League meetings with the Reds this season, he has dealt five yellow cards to Liverpool players.

And the exit at Anfield is likely to be exploited as much as the entry, with the squad composition next season almost certain to be significantly different given the large number of upcoming departures.
Who leaves for sure? There are currently only two guaranteed departures from Anfield. Roberto Firmino has already confirmed he will leave at the end of the season when his current contract expires after eight years at the club and Arthur Melo will return to Juventus after a loan spell that could have been benevolent rather than better.
Who do you think is going? However, Firmino isn’t the only Liverpool player set to become a free agent this summer. But while the others have not officially confirmed their intentions, at this late stage it looks increasingly unlikely that they will continue with the Reds. James Milner is the most talked about player who, like Firmino, has been at the club since the summer of 2015. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who signed two years later, is expected to leave as speculation grows that Naby Keita could return to Germany. It is perhaps no coincidence that none of those three have started a Premier League game in midfield since February.
Who could leave? That’s the trickier question, much of it will depend on what Liverpool can achieve in terms of signing new players and the resources available to target certain parts of the squad. Therefore, the Reds will keep an open mind, with nothing set in stone just yet. That goes for Fabio Carvalho, who has been linked with a summer outing having played just five minutes in the Premier League since he appeared in 10 of his first 11 top games. A loan is not excluded.
Caoimhin Kelleher would attract a lot of attention if allowed to leave, having made just three appearances since the feat in the League Cup final 14 months ago. But with Adrian on the verge of leaving, Liverpool won’t want to sell themselves short on goalkeeper options behind Alisson Becker.
