Fabinho reveals Liverpool team’s ‘best passer’ and explains Trent Alexander-Arnold formation change

Fabinho spoke ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield tomorrow

Fabinho has shed light on Liverpool’s tactical change, which has often seen the Brazilian assisted by Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

With the Reds struggling for most of the season so far, both players have come under scrutiny this year with their starkly underperforming performances. With Jurgen Klopp switching to an inverted full-back formation, Liverpool are slowly finding form towards the end of the season.

With such a line-up, Alexander-Arnold moves into midfield alongside the Brazilian when the Reds are on the ball. The right-back is thriving in his new role and has bagged five assists in his last four appearances. Meanwhile, Liverpool enter Sunday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur after a five-game unbeaten streak. And with Fabinho’s form also much improved, he revealed how the change has taken the Reds back to their best.

“We are playing very well now. Whether we play midweek, at weekends, we can continue to play very well,” he told the club. “Physically, I feel that the team is also very good. We can see the reaction of each player in the match, the counter pressure, everything is there.

“And then of course we saw the quality on the ball. We always create chances, we’ll always have chances and we’re also clinical in front of goal.

“Everyone has the same idea, they react very well. If a player loses the ball, everyone is ready to put pressure and get it back. I think that’s really important.

“That’s always how we play – counter-pressure, reaction. I think it works very well. Curtis (Jones) came to the team a few games ago and is playing great. I think it’s really important to have a player like him, he plays at the highest level because he really helps us. “And then we changed some things in our system. Now Trent, when we have the ball, he comes a little closer to me and I think that’s worked out really well for us. He’s a really good player with the ball.”

“Me and him, I think we’re doing well, we understand each other. I think the team is playing really well right now and we just need to keep up that momentum and keep playing well and winning games.”

He continued: “I’m not really surprised (how well the new midfield works). Curtis, I know him well, I know his qualities. He’s the kind of player who always looks ready.

“I don’t know how many games he played on the bench or even off the bench, [but] when he came into the starting XI he always played well. That’s why I say he’s already ready. I am not surprised at all with its performance. “And Trent, we all know his qualities. I’ve said it before, even when he plays right back, he likes to get down a bit to receive the ball in a similar position and pass the ball because he could be the best passer in the team.

“Now he’s more in this position and I think he really likes being in this position, like having more ball and being more important in this part of the pitch.

“It works very well for him and for us. I hope he continues to improve in this position because me, him, Hendo, Curtis, we play very well in this part of the pitch. It’s good for the team.”
