Handball controversy and more as Jurgen Klopp mention 5 key things on post-West Ham press conference
Jurgen Klopp praised Curtis Jones and revealed he had talks with John Henry after his side secured a third successive victory with a 2-1 win at West Ham.
Here are the coach’s top 5 points as he reflects on the performance
Liverpool “remained calm”
The manager was delighted with his side’s performance, including their response to adversity by going 1-0 down just 12 minutes into the game.
He praised his side’s character and the way he controlled the game en route to three more crucial points.
“We kept our cool, kept playing, scored our screamer as well and controlled the game,” explained Klopp. “I’m not 100 per cent sure, but I felt like I had around 80 per cent possession.”
Dispute over handball
Klopp was asked to comment on the referee’s decision not to award West Ham a penalty for a late Thiago handball in the penalty area.
David Moyes was visibly frustrated that his side weren’t awarded a penalty in the final minutes, but the Liverpool manager took a balanced stance on the incident.
He told reporters: “I’ve heard of handball now. I thought he had just dropped the ball but I can see why Moyesie would think otherwise.
Jones continues to shine
Klopp hailed Curtis Jones’ contribution to the team as he recorded his fifth successive start for the Reds.
The boss explained that Liverpool needed to be “super careful” with Jones given his injury concerns, but insisted he is “doing very well” as he interferes more and more in the starting line-up.
Improved form defense key
Klopp was quick to point to the defense as the main reason for his side’s improved results in recent weeks.
“We defend very differently,” he described the events, adding that “defence” is a key factor in Liverpool’s progress. While West Ham created clear chances, Klopp was pleased with how his entire squad limited the hosts overall.
About “Conversations” with John W. Henry
Principal Liverpool owner John W. Henry was present for the Reds’ victory at the London Stadium and understandably raised questions about possible talks with the manager during his visit. Klopp confirmed that he knew Henry would watch the fight, revealing they had “conversations” before the match.
“He was at the hotel last night that we were already talking about,” Klopp revealed before continuing: “I knew he was coming, yeah.”
