‘I didn’t say it’ – Gary Neville explained a new theory he calls Rasmus Hojlund-Erling Haaland

Fresh off a brace against Luton Town on Sunday afternoon, Gary Neville thinks Rasmus Hojlund of Manchester United is ‘Erling Haaland in the making’.

Upon joining United during the summer transfer window, Hojlund was met with high expectations. The Danish striker was anticipated to start playing right away after signing for £72 million, much like his opponent Haaland from Scandinavia, who set a number of records during Manchester City’s historic Treble campaign.

Despite performing well in the Champions League, Hojlund suffered a goal drought in the Premier League and failed to score in his opening 14 appearances in the division. However, since breaking his duck in the dramatic Boxing Day victory over Aston Villa, the 21-year-old has been in spectacular form.

The centre-forward bagged his seventh goal in his last six appearances this weekend as the Reds beat the Hatters at Kenilworth Road. Observing his performance was Neville who gave an exciting prediction on his Sky Sports podcast.

He said: “Hojlund looked like, and I didn’t say it on commentary, but he looked like a Haaland in the making.

“Just power and strength and that aggression in his running. I really love that about a United centre-forward, I’ve always liked it.”

While he refrained from comparing Hojlund to Haaland during the match, Neville waxed lyrical about the young star when discussing the opener. “Well what was evident straightaway was that Luton would be playing man-to-man,” he said.

“Amari’i Bell needs to deal with it, but he doesn’t and Rasmus Hojlund is devastating. It has taken a few months for him to settle in, but he’s the real deal and firing now week in, week out. He looks so confident. So good in front of goal.”
