Jamie Carragher calls Tottenham Hotspur a ‘shame’ in Newcastle United’s brutal verdict
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has branded Tottenham Hotspur a “shame” during their first-half implosion against Newcastle United.
Jacob Murphy and Aleksandar Isak each scored two goals, with Joelinton adding his name to the goalscoring chart as Eddie Howe’s side netted five in the opening 20 minutes of their European Cup game. The race for the Premier League’s top four took another turn as Cristian Stellini was confused after the Magpies stormed 5-0 at half-time at St James’ Park.
Liverpool picked up back-to-back wins in their hard-fought triumph over Nottingham Forest on Saturday to move up the Europa League spot to three points clear of Spurs. After half an hour it was damage control for Spurs in the north east.
PAUL GORST: Sadio Mane is not the player Liverpool missed the most and he proved it yesterday
Carragher couldn’t resist thinking about what happened on Sunday.
The former defender was brutal in his response, tweeting: “Newcastle are fantastic, they have been all season. Tottenham are a disgrace!
“How did they manage to go back four for the first time this season, with Porro full-back who can’t defend and Perisic who is a winger. Now he brings a good coach, not Conte’s team-mate”.
The North London club travel to Merseyside this weekend for another important meeting in the fight for next season’s European football. The Reds already have defeats at the hands of Bournemouth and Manchester United this season, as well as emphatic wins over Rangers ahead of a six-six win over Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday.
Stellini, who was assistant coach to Antonio Conte during the Italian’s stay in the capital, replaced the former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss after he was sacked during the international break in March. The Spurs bosses’ decision came days after Conte’s furious tirade against his players after their capitulation against relegation-threatened Southampton saw them squander a two-goal lead.
