Jamie Carragher joked he sold Liverpool striker Diogo Jota for his performance in the first 30 minutes against Leeds United

Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football

Jamie Carragher joked he ‘sold’ Diogo Jota for ‘£25m’ in the first half hour against Leeds United on Monday night.

Eyebrows were raised when Jurgen Klopp decided to stay with the Portugal striker in his starting XI despite not finding a goal in 32 games but he ended his shot at Elland Road.

Jota lost possession 15 times in the first half hour of the match at West Yorkshire and it prompted Carragher to joke about selling Liverpool’s number 20.

Liverpool are looking to strengthen their midfield in the summer transfer window, with Alexis Mac Allister and Mason Mount on the radar

The next transfer window after dropping out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham in the summer, but a rebuild under Jurgen Klopp is still on the way.

Argentine world champion Mac Allister is said to be on Klopp’s list of targets alongside Chelsea star Mason Mount and Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch. Argentina’s World Cup winner Mac Allister would be on Klopp’s target list alongside Chelsea star Mason Mount and Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been asked about possible summer moves to Anfield

Jürgen Klopp has responded to recent criticism over the age of his Liverpool side by insisting the club will stay smart in the transfer window before a long overdue rebuild.

After winning the FA Cup and League Cup and achieving an unprecedented quadruple last time out, this season ended in disappointment and without a trophy.

Such a failure in cup competitions, which looks set to be compounded by a lack of Champions League qualification for the first time in seven seasons via the Premier League, will force Liverpool into a busy summer of spending as they look to build key parts of their team, mainly in midfield

However, one player who won’t be coming to Anfield is Jude Bellingham, and ECHO knows club officials have decided not to transfer the Borussia Dortmund and England superstar in favor of a more hands-on approach to Klopp’s much-needed squad revamp

However, in light of the end of Liverpool’s pursuit of the 19-year-old, some fans have stressed that they have failed to gradually lower the average age of the Reds’ engine room. Indeed, 12 members of the squad that drew with Arsenal last weekend were present during the 2019 Champions League triumph, with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain excluded

Yet Klopp has punctually responded to recent discussions about his squad’s age, insisting that the experience of older players in his ranks has been key to the club’s recent trophy-winning seasons.

“We don’t have the youngest squad, we know that, but we also have a lot of young players,” the Liverpool manager said ahead of Monday’s Premier League match at Elland Road against Leeds United. “We’ve built a team over the years, we’ve been successful and last season we almost won the quadruple – as close as you can get.

“A lot of what we’ve achieved is based on the experience of the boys together – a year later we’re not that good. Everyone tells us: ‘You’re too old, we already knew that.’ Oh, did you know?’.”

However, when asked about potential transfers to lower the average age, Klopp refused to delve into player or fee speculation, confirming instead that the Reds will continue to operate in their usual ‘smart’ way. “I can’t give you a number [which we will issue] and I won’t give you a number,” Klopp added. “It’s about doing the right things, it’s not about how much, it’s about the right things and that’s what we always try to do.
