Jonny Evans gives his immediate reaction to United’s first startup since returning to the club

Jonny Evans made his dream return to Old Trafford this summer and started his first game for the Red Devils since returning, in a 1-0 win over Burnley.

The Northern Ireland defender was brought on amid a growing injury crisis at Old Trafford with Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire unable to miss and Raphael Varane barely fit on the bench.

The United academy graduate was initially signed on a trial basis but after impressing Erik Ten Hag in pre-season, the defender was signed on a one-year contract with the Red Devils.

Evans completed 60 of 66 passing attempts for the Ten Hag team and he was not out of place with the Reds. He should also have seen his header from a corner allowed.

Evans’ reaction during the first start

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Evans seemed delighted with his first start for the club since leaving his boyhood club in 2015.

“I loved every minute,” Evans said, “before the match I had a feeling of absolute excitement, I was stunned. “I think today was my 200th game for United and it was one of the best days of my life.”

The Northern Irishman looked delighted with his performance and the defender could feature more this season if he continues to deliver such performances.

There were certainly some questions when it was reported that Evans would be signed on a one-year deal following his last season at United, but those questions may be unfounded.

Evans talked about his decision to join the Red Devils and said:
“When I received the call, I was a bit worried. I think there is no other choice for me. I want to go back and see where it took me while being as professional as possible.

Evans could well be in contention for a starting spot in United’s next match against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup and based on the defender’s performance at Turf Moor, it looks well deserved.
