Jurgen Klopp makes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ‘regret’ after Liverpool exit
Kopp pays tribute to Oxlade-Chamberlain as the Liverpool midfielder calls time on his six-year career with the Reds
Jurgen Klopp has paid tribute to the outgoing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but admits the Liverpool midfielder is likely leaving Anfield with some regrets.
Oxlade-Chamberlain spent six years on Merseyside and played his part in helping the club win every major trophy between 2019 and 2022 before his final term ended with him making just 13 appearances.
A career-threatening knee injury that was picked up in a Champions League semi-final win over Roma in April 2018 had a major impact on Oxlade-Chamberlain’s time at Anfield and the former Arsenal has only made 39 appearances in the last three full Premier League campaigns.
Despite the injury issues, however, Oxlade-Chamberlain leavesthe club with winners’ medals in the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
And Klopp has hailed the departing midfielder, saying he was a “joy to work with” during his time with Liverpool as he gets sets to assess his options as a free agent.
Ox is a super guy, an absolutely super guy,” Klopp told the clubs official website Now with Ox it’s a bigger shame, how it sometimes is with players – he had here super times and now in the end I’m pretty sure he is not 100% happy and I can understand that, definitely.
“But the one moment that comes in my mind, it describes a little bit the time here but as well how good he is, is the situation in the Roma semi-final, the home game when he got injured. In that moment I had no idea how to replace him, honestly – Ox was that good.
“It was everything: he came here, had played from time to time at wing-back at Arsenal, winger for sure, and he became a proper No.8 here in the way we wanted to play – super-energetic, technically outstanding.
“I remember early and we had our first finishing sessions and I looked and thought, ‘He didn’t score that many goals in the past, if I could shoot like you I would start in the morning at seven and finish shooting at nine or 10 o’clock because it’s incredible!’

Jurgen Klopp is flattered after hearing Timo Werner’s recent comments about Liverpool but would not be drawn on any transfer speculation.
The 23-year-old German marksman said he’d suit Klopp’s playing style before describing him as “the best coach in the world”.
Could Liverpool sign Werner? Five things to know…
Werner has been linked with a move to Anfield during the previous two transfer windows.
The 23-year-old is currently enjoying the form of his life with 27 goals and 11 assists in 33 appearances this season.
It has recently been claimed by German news outlet Sport1 that Werner could cost as little as £30m, owing to his release clause.
Werner has now talked up a move to Merseyside after suggesting his style of play fits Klopp’s counter-pressing mould.
Athletic journalist James Pearce says he’d “be surprised if Timo Werner didn’t come to Liverpool.”
Werner has seen his name heavily associated with a switch to Anfield and those rumours are only going to increase now following his praise of the current European Cup-winning manager
The RB Leipzig frontman is in stellar form this term, with his 27-goal haul helping Leipzig to second in the Bundesliga and providing Julian Nagelsmann’s side a slender advantage in the Champions League over Tottenham Hotspur.
Due to Werner’s relentless engine, speed and high-pressing ability, he has previously been described as an archetypal Klopp player, a suggestion even he attests to.
“Our game in London has brought Liverpool [links] to the media,” Werner told Welt.
“[They] have Jurgen Klopp, the best coach in the world who is German. There are a lot of things that would suggest that my playing style might be a good fit [in his system at Liverpool].”
Klopp, who is four wins away from ending the Reds 30-year championship drought, is happy to hear Werner’s appraisal but stresses there’s nothing more to it.

“I prefer that when players speak about us they are positive, rather than saying ‘that’s the last club I would ever go to,” he told Sky Sports News.
“From that point of view it’s obviously nice, but that’s all – there’s nothing else to say about it.”
‘We put ourselves under too much pressure’
Leipzig have occupied top spot in the Bundesliga across numerous stages of this season, but they currently find themselves second behind perennial league leaders Bayern Munich.
The Bavarians have picked up their form following the dismissal of Niko Kovac and installation of Hans-Dieter Flick, but Werner believes Leipzig only have themselves to blame for surrendering their occupation at the summit.
“It’s hard to think about where to play next year if you want to step on the gas here and now,” he continued.
“During the winter break, we made the mistake of being too concerned with the championship. We put ourselves under too much pressure.”

Under Klopp’s guidance, Liverpool has become known for its high pressing, fast-paced style of play, which has led to some thrilling matches and memorable moments.
In addition to his focus on the team’s success on the field, Klopp has also been committed to building a strong, positive culture at the club. He has placed a strong emphasis on team unity, creating a sense of camaraderie among his players and staff that extends beyond the confines of the playing field. Klopp has also been a strong advocate for social justice issues, using his platform to speak out on issues such as racism and inequality.
Finally, Klopp’s dream for Liverpool is to establish the club as a dominant force in European football. He has a deep appreciation for the history and tradition of the European game, and he has made it clear that he wants Liverpool to be among the elite clubs on the continent. In 2019, Klopp achieved this dream when he led Liverpool to their sixth European Cup triumph, cementing the club’s place among the greats of European football.

Secondly, Klopp is committed to building a strong team culture that values hard work, teamwork, and a never-say-die attitude. He wants his players to be fully committed to the club’s goals and to be willing to put in the effort needed to achieve them.
In terms of specific goals, Klopp has said that he wants Liverpool to win the Premier League and the Champions League. He has already achieved both of these feats during his time at the club, but his ultimate dream is to build a team that can sustain this success over a long period of time.
To achieve this, Klopp has emphasized the importance of building a deep squad with quality players in every position, and of developing young players through the club’s academy system. He has also stressed the need for the club to continue investing in state-of-the-art facilities and technology to give the team the best possible chance of success.
Overall, Klopp’s dream for Liverpool is to build a club that is not only successful on the pitch, but that is also respected and admired around the world for its style of play, its team culture, and its commitment to excellence in all areas.
