Onda Cero report that De Gea has met with the club’s outgoing president to discuss the situation of the club and their plans for the future. The 33-year-old still has plenty of playing years left in him, but appears open to reviewing his options once he hangs up his gloves.

De Gea left United at the end of last season, despite there previously being an offer of a new contract on the table. The Spaniard had spent more than a decade at Old Trafford but playing limitations led Erik ten Hag to pursuing new options, eventually signing Andre Onana.

There had been talk of De Gea making a stunning comeback to Manchester, especially with Onana set to be absent for several weeks during the Africa Cup of Nations. Amid growing speculation, the goalkeeper posted a cryptic message on social media, doing little to quash rumours.

“I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together. Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings. Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me.”
