Kylian Mbappe has made a significant transfer decision with a 2024 departure from Paris Saint-Germain likely amid strong Premier League interest. Arsenal and Chelsea appeared to initially be the two frontrunners, however Liverpool are now firmly leading the race with Jurgen Klopp’s side ready to make their move.
The 25-year-old has just entered the final six months of his contract at Parc Des Princes after informing the PSG board he would not be signing the one-year extension option last summer. That decision set about a chain of events where Mbappe was banished from the first-team squad and put up for sale to the highest bidder.
Ultimately, despite a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, Mbappe remained in the French capital and was reintegrated back into new manager Luis Enrique’s squad. Since then, Mbappe has scored 22 goals in all competitions and the opening of the January transfer window has seen exit links resume.
Liverpool now appear to be trying to tempt him with a move to Anfield, nearly seven years on from holding talks with the Frenchman while he was still at Monaco. While there is certainly no guarantee he joins Liverpool, a departure from PSG continues to look likely with an £69million decision made by the player himself.
For staying at PSG, as per The Mirror, Mbappe was set to receive €80million, however he chose to decline the first instalment and he has continued with that stance in order to secure a more amicable exit. However, public comments from Mbappe suggest there is a chance he stays at PSG.
“I’m very, very, very motivated for this year. It’s very important,” he said earlier this week following a 2-0 win against Toulouse to win the Trophee des Champions. “As I said, we’ve got titles to go after and we’ve already won one, so that’s already done. After that, no, I haven’t made up my mind yet. But in any case, with the agreement I made with the chairman this summer, it doesn’t matter what I decide.
“We managed to protect all parties and preserve the club’’ serenity for the challenges ahead, which remains the most important thing. So we’ll say it’s secondary.” PSG were just able to secure a spot in the last-16 of the Champions League after picking up a point on the final matchday against Borussia Dortmund.
In the Ligue 1 standings, the Parisians are top and clear by five points after a difficult start was followed by eight consecutive wins and 12-game unbeaten streak in league action.
