Tottenham were on the receiving end of a bit of luck during the first half of their Premier League clash with Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

An even first half an hour had a little bit of controversy after 25 minutes when an Alejandro Garnacho shot was blocked by Cristian Romero. Garnacho was probably sure the Spurs defender had handballed it, with replays showing it did strike the Argentine defender’s arm in the penalty box.

Romero’s arm was slightly outstretched, but his arm was deemed to be close enough to his body under the new proximity rules and not in an unnatural position to get away with the incident.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville said: “Both of his arms are up, it’s whether or not that right arm is close enough to his body to get away with it and I’d say maybe it just is.

“I think if it’s the left arm that it hits he’s in big trouble because it’s above his head, but the right arm is just within that distance that referees over this first week of the season have decided to stay clear of overturning the on-field decision.”
