Manchester United’s Andre Onana has made a fine start in Manchester, but the goalkeeper is likely to face a penalty in his Premier League opener.
Late in the game, a hopeful Wolves cross saw Andre Onana seemingly save Sasa Kalajdzic but after a VAR review of the incident, the penalty was not taken.
As expected, the umpires received criticism from opponents’ supporters and even the media that VAR controllers missed out on such a decision.
Well, after weeks of debating the decision, the audio from the referee’s microphone was revealed on Sky Sports, which sparked even more controversy.
Onana penalty decision
When VAR looked at the situation, Michael Salisbury, who was in charge of VAR in that match, felt that both tackled the ball hard and it shouldn’t have been a penalty. Salisbury told VAR: “I think because the Wolves player (Kalajdzic) didn’t head, it was a normal collision because both were fighting for the ball.”
However, PGMOL director Howard Webb believes the decision was wrong and that the referee should have been encouraged to watch the screen.
Webb said: “The referee should have checked the screen and awarded Wolves a penalty.
“Players can collide when looking for the ball from the air, but the difference with this time (collision) is that Onana rushed into the striker, not the two jumping at each other.”
Flower of hypocrisy
While this decision may seem misguided, what could frustrate United fans is the decision they choose to reconsider in favor of the Red Devils.
What do you think about revisiting the blatant penalty United should have taken against Tottenham Hotspur, or Alejandro Garnacho’s offside goal, or Bukayo Saka’s late tackle against Bruno Fernandes? Seems a bit strange.
However, United may feel dissatisfied with some decisions this season, but I’m sure the Reds will see them play out their way in the big games, it’s just a matter of fact. luck of the draw.
