‘I’m a Liverpool hero – but I’d drink in Everton pubs so everyone would leave me alone’
Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann had a hugely enjoyable time at Anfield, although he needed time away from fans at points where the German wouldn’t be bothered

Dietmar Hamann had a love affair with the city of Liverpool – but ‘Didi’ has admitted he used to head to the blue side when he just wanted a bit of peace and quiet in the pub.

The German was one of those players who may not be flashy or eye-catching, but left a mark on the fans of the sides he donned the kits of – and converting a penalty in the 2005 Champions League final will also have helped at Anfield. Having joined the Reds from Newcastle United in 1996 after a long and successful spell with Bayern Munich, Hamann played almost 200 times for the scouse outfit.

But while speaking to Peter Crouch, he revealed he would often head for the blue side of Merseyside for a drink, especially when all he wanted was not to be bothered by fans.

Hamann told That Peter Crouch Podcast: “They didn’t harass me in the red pubs but sometimes you want a bit of peace. If I go for a pint on my own, there’s a reason I’m going on my own – because I don’t want to speak to anyone. If I wanted to have a conversation i wouldn’t go on my own!

“But, I’ve got to say they’re (Liverpool fans) very thoughtful. People don’t harass you like in Italy, say. I’ve never played in Italy but they say they touch you, always want to take a photo. In those days there weren’t really camera phones, they just wanted to shake your hand or wanted an autograph so it was all good. But i used to go to blue pubs probably preferably.”

Luke Littler darts fans can back ‘The Nuke’ in Premier League with his playing shirt
Luke Littler fans can now buy the 17-year-old’s playing shirt to support him as he continues to demonstrate his talent in the Premier League.

The darts sensation was only 16 when he wowed Alexandra Palace at the World Darts Championship (WDC), despite a final loss to Luke Humphries.

The Nuke will continue playing against seven of the best dart players in the world — Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith, Nathan Aspinall, Rob Cross and Peter Wright — in a mini-tournament in a different city every Thursday until the final in May.

The night after the 2005 Champions League final has been recounted plenty of times by members of the squad, and Hamann commented on the squad’s drinking habits.

He added: “The other thing thing was there was never any trouble because people would say ‘Oh, you go to an Everton pub? I’d just say ‘Yeah.’ People appreciate that. We had to odd night out and sometimes when people have a drink crazy thins happen, but in seven years there there was never ever one situation when I felt ‘Oh, this could get out of hand now.’

“This is why the city is special and this is why I went there and I stayed for a long time. It was the longest time I played for a club and the most successful time, it was brilliant.”

Hamann will forever retain his cult hero status in Liverpool. And he will no doubt be forgiven for just wanting to have his preferred tipple without being interrupted.

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe once held talks with Liverpool before snubbing the club in order to join the French giants from rivals Monaco.

He previously had discussions with Liverpool owner John W Henry and was linked with a move to Anfield. And now, the 25-year-old forward has told PSG that he finally plans to leave the club after seven years there, according to The Athletic.

During his time at PSG, Mbappe scored 243 goals in 290 matches and won 13 major trophies. Real Madrid, though, are said to be leading the race to sign him on a free transfer, the Mirror reports.

However, some ‘influential’ members of Mbappe’s team are reportedly unhappy with the terms currently on offer. This could give long-term admirers Liverpool a chance to swoop in. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ll have tried to sign him either. In early 2017, while Mbappe was playing for Monaco, he was reported to have had a two-hour meeting with Liverpool chief Henry on his private jet.

Mbappe has become one of the best players in the world, winning the World Cup with France and scoring goals for fun at PSG. And it’s no surprise Jurgen Klopp, who will leave Anfield in the summer, is a big fan of the player.

Klopp said in 2018: “I love him, to be honest. What a player he is and a nice lad as well, so he’s a really good kid. What a player, what a player.

“Everyone knows him since he was 16, 17 when he impressed in Monaco’s youth teams, and I saw videos of him when he was 17 and he destroyed defensive lines as he is doing now.

“He’s at an unbelievable level of consistency at that age. He’s an outstanding player, that’s clear, but he can deliver, deliver and deliver, which shows he’s really good educated boy and he knows what he is doing.”

Jurgen Klopp Divorced His Wife Immediately he Was Sacked From Being Liverpool Coach

Jose Mourinho predicts who will win the Premier League title this season

We have an exciting Premier League title race on our hands, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal right in the thick of it and Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa not too far behind.

Jurgen Klopp‘s Reds currently top the standings with 54 points, while Pep Guardiola‘s Citizens and Mikel Arteta‘s Gunners are just two points behind.

Further back, Ange Postecoglou‘s Spurs are fourth on 47 points, while Unai Emery‘s Villans are fifth with 46 points. And a lot can change in the space of a few matchdays.

Jose Mourinho has now given his prediction as to who’ll win the Premier League title. And for the legendary Portuguese manager, it’s a hard call between two teams.

Mourinho was interviewed by Rio Ferdinand and Stephen Howson on FIVE, the former asking the 61-year-old who he felt would win the English top-flight title.

He replied: “Premier League… City? Liverpool? So like that I’m not I’m not making a mistake. City, Liverpool, but I think City.”

Jose Mourinho goes for Manchester City ahead of Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa
Let’s face it, City are the favourites for the Premier League title at present. They have won it five times in the last six years and their squad remains packed with quality and strength in depth.

Barcelona think £34m Liverpool player is now the best in his position in the world

As we slowly start to move towards the summer transfer window, rumours are swirling around Liverpool.

From claims that Kylian Mbappe has explored a move to Anfield, to suggestions that Virgil van Dijk could leave. It’s set to be a busy time for the Reds after Jurgen Klopp leaves.

Perhaps the most tedious of all those sagas is the discussion over Mohamed Salah’s future. Salah has been excellent again for Liverpool this season but the suggestions that it’s his last at the club haven’t gone away.

Largely, that talk has centred on the possibility of the Egyptian moving to the Saudi Pro League. However, Mundo Deportivo today report that Salah is actually being looked at by Barcelona.

The La Liga giants are said to be looking for a wide forward and have reportedly identified Liverpool’s No.11 as the absolute best option on either wing.

However, as much as they love Mo, there’s a problem. Barcelona simply cannot afford to sign him. Instead, they are claimed to be more realistically looking at Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Napoli

Barca priced out of Salah move
There was a time when a Liverpool player being linked with Barcelona would have sent fear coursing through every supporter.

When Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez heard a whiff of interest from Catalonia, for example, they couldn’t wait to jump ship. It felt like the Reds simply couldn’t compete.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Fast forward just a few short years though, and the landscape is now very different.

Given their financial situation, Barca are hardly really a threat anymore. There can’t be a person alive who seriously thinks that they can afford Salah right now.

At one time, that may not have even mattered. Such was the pull of the Camp Nou, they could attract the best players around despite their accounts being in a bit of a mess.

Mohamed Salah

But now, they don’t really have a whole lot going for them. Fourth in La Liga and set to be without a manager this summer, they can no longer even wheel out Lionel Messi as a big old carrot. There’s been talk that they could even lose hot prospect Lamine Yamal to the Reds.

They’ll surely be back at some stage, but for the time being Barcelona are not at the top, top table of European football. .

It could of course be argued that neither are Liverpool just now. Set to lose Klopp, uncertainty surrounds their future as a superpower on the continent.

Nevertheless, Anfield is still by far and away a better place for Salah to be. The £34m man may end up being lost to Saudi Arabia, but that’s a whole different story. He’s not going to Barcelona.

Maple Leafs’ Morgan Rielly suspended five games for cross-checking Senators’ Ridly Greig
By Austin Nivison

1 min read
Watch Now:
Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been suspended five games after cross-checking Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig in the head on Saturday night. Rielly was retaliating after Greig fired a slapshot into the Maple Leafs’ empty net for a 4-2 win.

With a handful of seconds left on the clock, Greig cruised into the Toronto zone before winding up and hammering a shot into the open net. Rielly took issue with that, and he confronted Greig. In doing so, Rielly raised his stick and cross-checked Greig in the face.

Greig immediately went to the ice as a scrum broke out in the Maple Leafs’ zone.

Upon reviewing the play, the NHL Department of Player Safety decided to suspend Rielly for five games. In their explanation video, the Department of Player Safety noted that the players weren’t “mutually jousting” with both accepting some degree of risk.

“This play occurs well after the goal has been scored late in the game with the score out of reach and for the sole purpose of retribution,” the NHL said in its explanation. “While we acknowledge Rielly’s argument that his stick does make some contact with Greig’s body before striking Greig in the head, this is not a case in which a stick that is raised to an excusable level is significantly deflected up and into the head and neck area.”

Rielly, the Maple Leafs’ top defenseman, served the first game of his suspension on Tuesday night when Toronto defeated the St. Louis Blues, 4-1. Rielly, who has 43 points in 50 games, will also miss games against the Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, Blues, and Arizona Coyotes.

Liverpool, Man City Learn Fee Needed To Complete Stunning Arsenal Raid As Record-breaking Price Tag Emerges
Liverpool, Man City learn fee needed to complete stunning Arsenal raid as record-breaking price tag emerges
James Holland 37 minutes ago
Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and William Saliba of Arsenal
Liverpool and Man City have found out how much Bukayo Saka will cost

Liverpool and Manchester City have discovered they must obliterate the Premier League transfer record to sign Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka, with the Gunners reportedly handing him a massive new price tag.

Saka is a product of the Arsenal academy who made his senior debut in November 2018. The right winger has since emerged into arguably Arsenal’s most important player, with his first-team record standing at 52 goals and 53 assists in 210 appearances.

That includes 13 goals and 13 assists in 31 games so far this season, with Saka helping Arsenal challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title while also reaching the Champions League round of 16.

Saka loves Arsenal and is thoroughly enjoying his time with the North London club, though that has not stopped him from being linked with some of their fierce English rivals.

Liverpool and Man City are understood to be the main clubs who would bid for Saka, should Arsenal suddenly go downhill and struggle to match his huge ambitions.

Liverpool in particular are the club to watch out for, as they are big fans of the England star and might be in need of a new right winger if Mo Salah departs in the summer.

DON’T MISS: Man City ‘enquiry’ for five-star Liverpool target revealed after big Premier League transfer miss

Football Insider have now provided an update on Saka’s situation at the Emirates. They state that Arsenal chiefs have been delighted by the wide man’s ‘stratospheric rise’ in recent years and feel he is now the second-most valuable player in England, behind only City striker Erling Haaland.

Should Liverpool or City make contact for Saka’s possible capture, then Arsenal will tell them they must pay a Premier League-record fee as they will not accept anything less than £150-200million.

Bukayo Saka would be a costly signing
The top three most expensive Prem players currently are Moises Caicedo (£100m rising to £115m), Enzo Fernandez (£107m) and Saka’s Arsenal team-mate Declan Rice (£105m). Saka moving for that £200m figure would see him level Neymar as the most expensive player of all time, following the Brazilian’s colossal switch from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2017.

This is clearly a massive amount of money for a club to spend on Saka, but Arsenal feel the asking price is very much justified. They think the 22-year-old would ‘walk into any team in the world’ and due to his age he is only going to get better.

Arsenal demanding £150-200m for Saka immediately rules Liverpool out of the race, as they would struggle to spend over £120m on a single player. Their record signing is Darwin Nunez (£64m rising to £85m), while they also bid £111m for Caicedo before losing out on him to Chelsea.

City do have the financial backing needed to part with such a monstrous sum. Although, they would rather spread out such money over two or three transfers, to ensure that several areas of the team are improved.
