Steven Gerrard just warned Liverpool about Harry Kane’s $123m move that could change the Premier League
With Tottenham Hotspur stuck in an endless loop, Harry Kane could consider pushing for a transfer again, potentially changing the landscape for Liverpool.
In the summer of 2021, Liverpool fans became concerned when Manchester City went after Harry Kane.
The combination of the Premier League’s deadliest sharpshooter and most creative squad could prove devastating, resulting in a success rate not unlike Erling Haaland’s this season.
However, Spurs stood their ground, turning down a $123m (£114m) offer and refusing to budge when Kane delayed his return for pre-season training (via The Athletic).
At the end of August, Kane reportedly released a statement saying he would remain at the club. Three months later, after Nuno’s grim tenure likely exacerbated Kane’s remorse, Spurs appointed Antonio Conte.
The capture of the Italian, a five-time title winner and one of the best coaches in the world, was considered a coup.
And the optimism initially proved justified as Conte’s side rallied to beat their nearest rivals Arsenal into fourth.
It seemed that the Italian could finally make Tottenham a serious team, or rather make it ‘on-Spursy’. With an impressive summer spend of $212m (£172m/€196m) under his belt, it looked like he was well on his way to vying for the big honor that the trophyless Kane desperately covets. The Athletic reported in August that Kane was “happier at Tottenham Hotspur than he has been in years”, prompted by the Conte project. There were even rumors that there was a possibility that he could sign a new contract and put to rest speculation about his future.
But Spurs’ momentum quickly faded and Conte’s permanent dismissal over the weekend left optimism at the club at an all-time low.
He’s tried the long-term approach with Mauricio Pochettino and the winning short-term strategy with José Mourinho and Conte, and he’s no closer to being a contender.
Indeed, he is further away. Spurs have four consecutive top-four finishes under Pochettino, but if they lose Liverpool or Newcastle this year, it will be in the four years following his sacking.
There doesn’t seem to be any real prospect of the Lilywhites closing the gap to top teams, and seeking a reunion with Pochettino in the summer will only reinforce the sense of an unbreakable cycle.
All of this could prompt Kane to push towards the exit door once again.
“He faces a major decision in his career,” Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard told Channel 4 (via BBC Sport) on Sunday, hours before Conte’s sacking was confirmed.
“I’ve been there myself, where you think ‘Is my team good enough for me to win medals?’ ‘Will I get what I want from my career?'”
At the mom
Kane has more influence this time around, with the possibility of a no-transfer exit certainly playing a big part in Tottenham’s thinking. But where could he go?
Manchester City’s door is closed following Haaland’s arrival but Bayern Munich, who still have a hole to fill in the form of Robert Lewandowski, are reportedly keen (via Sky Sports).
Another competitor is Manchester United, who will enter the elite market, the number nine specialist they lacked. The Telegraph reported last month that the Red Devils had set aside $123 million for a move this summer for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen’s Kane.
The acquisition of Kane, three-time Golden Boot winner, one of three Premier League 200 club members and arguably the most complete striker in the world, would surely be the perfect way for Manchester United’s future new owners to establish themselves to announce.
And it’s a move that could have major implications for Liverpool, who expect to re-establish themselves as Premier League leaders with their signings in the summer.
It may not just be Manchester City and Arsenal who are standing in the way, as with Kane on board, Manchester United could also enter the equation. Some sort of warning from Gerrard for him to come true would no doubt make Liverpool’s task more difficult. Indeed, events in North London would have played perfectly into the hands of the Reds’ biggest rival.
