The deal has expired: the journalist updates Benjamin Pavard between connections with Liverpool and Arsenal
Arsenal and Liverpool could be two of the most active sides in the transfer window entering the last couple of weeks.
Both the Gunners and the Reds are looking for fresh faces despite already being busy this summer.
Arsenal may need a defender to fill the void left by Jurrien Timber’s injury, while Liverpool are also reportedly interested in another midfielder and possibly the defence.
However, it appears one player will not be signing both this summer, Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard.
Liverpool and Arsenal have both been linked with a move by Pavard. But now, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, Pavard will stay in Monaco.
Plettenberg takes to his X account to confirm the news, claiming a proposed transfer to Inter Milan for Pavard is all but cancelled. And with that, the player now remains in Germany.
Naturally, the fact that Pavard will remain at Monaco going forward means that both Liverpool and Arsenal will now have to look everywhere for a new defender.
Recent weeks had suggested that Pavard would move to England for £26m. However, the defender, praised by Thomas Tuchel for being so underrated, is likely to stay where he is.
Pavard does not come it is a blow
If you look at the defenders who are currently on the market and the players who would absolutely not mind moving to a big club, Pavard would have been at the forefront.
That won’t be the case for Arsenal and Liverpool, however, and they now seem to have to look elsewhere.
Time is running out too. So it ends up being a rushed last-minute signing, or one of them paying big bucks for a player they really want to get over the finish line.
