Manchester United will be hoping to bring their pre-season tour of the United States to a close with a win when they face Liverpool at the Williams-Brice Stadium, kick-off 12.45am BST.

United, who last faced Liverpool in a pre-season fixture two years ago, will be targeting a third win of their pre-season campaign after beating Real Betis 3-2 in midweek. Marcus Rashford, Amad and Casemiro each scored in the first half to seal a thoroughly deserved win.

United are now less than a week away from their first competitive outing of the season and will be determined to head into the Community Shield clash at Wembley with a spring in their step. They have won two and lost two of their opening four friendlies.

Manager Erik ten Hag is likely to use the clash with Liverpool to name as strong a side as possible with a view to preparing for next Saturday’s clash with Manchester City. Andre Onana and Mason Mount will be among those targeting recalls.

OPINION: United predicted line up vs Liverpool

Ahead of tonight’s game in South Carolina, a lot of the focus is on whether or not Marcus Rashford will play any part.

He limped off during the second half of the win over Real Betis in midweek, casting doubt over his availability for the final game of the pre-season tour. With United’s first competitive game of the season now just a week away, it feels as though it would be naive to risk him.

A new destination for United

There is a reasonable split of United and Liverpool fans in our hotel around 20 minutes from the stadium. One family’s mother and daughter are Liverpool fans while the son is a United fan.

For United, South Carolina is a new destination, so this game allows them to connect with a remote supporter base and play in front of them. New official supporters’ clubs were launched in North and South Carolina.

PRE-MATCH TALKING POINTS: Three United players could secure squad places vs Liverpool

United will be keen to bring their pre-season tour of the United States to a close with a victory over Liverpool.

After losing their tour opener against Arsenal last weekend, United got themselves on the right side of the scoreline in midweek, beating Real Betis 3-2 in San Diego.

Tonight’s clash with Liverpool is the final dress rehearsal ahead of the competitive action getting under way at Wembley against Manchester City in the Community Shield next Saturday.

Ten Hag faced Liverpool in his first game as United boss

Erik ten Hag’s first game in charge of United was a pre-season friendly against Liverpool in Thailand in July 2022.

United made light work of the Merseysiders on that occasion in Bangkok, winning 4-0. Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Facundo Pellistri and Fred were on the scoresheet that day.

Sancho is the only member of that quartet who will be in the United squad this evening.

How United should line up vs Liverpool

Ahead of tonight’s game in South Carolina, our United writers have had their say on how they think the Reds should line up.

Samuel Luckhurst

United have little choice but to continue with the outgoing Aaron Wan-Bissaka as there is no alternative at right back. Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans are both pretty much certain to stay for the season whereas Victor Lindelof isn’t. Harry Amass deserves to continue his upward curve.

Toby Collyer has done well in pre-season and merits a start. If Marcus Rashford is fit then he is the logical left winger and striker Ethan Wheatley has more of a future at the club than Jadon Sancho. Mason Mount has had a decent pre-season on the pitch, if not off it, and is the natural option in the No.10 role.

George Smith

Andre Onana should return in goal after taking up a watching brief from the bench against Real Betis. United are now arguably without every member of their first-choice back-four after losing Yoro to injury and it would make sense for Evans to store more minutes under his belt from the start.

Erik ten Hag mixed up his midfield against Betis, suggesting he could revert back to the trio that started against Arsenal. Collyer has been one of the shining lights of pre-season and Mount has impressed in the No.10 position.

Rashford is not worth risking after being forced off in San Diego, meaning Jadon Sancho could move out to the left side to accommodate a start for Wheatley through the middle. Amad should keep his place.
