What could Mason Mount bring to the table at Manchester United?
Reports have emerged that Chelsea star Mason Mount has agreed personal terms with Manchester United
The football transfer scene is abuzz with the name of Chelsea’s Mason Mount. Considered one of England’s brightest talents, the Cobham graduate has dazzled fans with his impressive technical ability, exceptional vision and unwavering dedication at Chelsea.
His unfaltering commitment to the game is evident in his tireless work rate and relentless pursuit of success, with this solidifying his status as a player with immense talent, which may be why the midfielder is on the tabs of Manchester United.
Reports suggest that Mount has agreed to personal terms with Man United, adding fuel to the speculation surrounding his potential move to the club. While the details of these reported terms remain undisclosed, it is an encouraging sign that Mount is open to the possibility of joining Erik ten Hag’s side.

Additionally, with Champions League football a guarantee in the red side of Manchester, the move would be highly desirable for the Englishman.
Mason Mount’s weaknesses and strength and where he would fit
With speculation rising over Mason Mount’s departure from Chelsea this summer and with Manchester United and Liverpool closely linked, the question is where would the midfielder fit in at Old Trafford?
Manchester United are said to be in “pole position” to sign Mount, with the Chelsea man unable to agree a new contract, with reports suggesting a £50million price tag.
Of course, the Red Davils aren’t the only team interested in the 24-year-old, and there’s still a chance he could sign an extended contract with his boyhood club.
But as Manchester United moves forward with plans to rebuild their midfield, Mount’s name has many fans talking.
So what would he bring to Manchester United?
Thinking within the boxes
Mount is an exceptional technical and athletic talent, his great intensity and intelligence off the ball matched by top quality in possession.
Mount made his breakthrough at Chelsea under Frank Lampard in 2019-20 and was part of a 4-3-3 attack.
Usually deployed as one of two number 8s in midfield, Mount performed similarly to the title-winning iteration of Gini Wijnaldum.
This piece from Smarterscout shows him popping up in wide areas despite him playing as a central midfielder, often linking play with outside players and slotting in to defend space behind attacking full-backs.
Mount’s prowess in this “between the boxes” role is also seen in his data from that season.
Transitional Gini-us
Maison Mount can focus on attacking transitions if he signs for Old Trafford this season.
The 7-0 loss to Man United showed what the next generation could look like, but this season the Reds have often struggled to develop their own direct attacks, as their timid play in the Bournemouth defeat showed.
Mount is not only excellent at building depth, but also at turning defense into offense, especially with fast runners in front of him.

Also in the 2021 Champions League final, Man City tried to get high pressing as Eduoard Mendy was forced to hit Ben Chilwell.
The left-back finds Mount in the left-half space and he again uses his upper body well to resist the challenge, giving Chelsea’s attacking players time to push forward. Once Chilwell overlaps, Mount uses clever dexterity to outmaneuver him.
Later, the exact same tactic led to the decisive moment of the match.
After Mendy and Chilwell meet again, Mount receives again – this time with room to turn, plays a wonderful through ball and sets up the winner for Havertz.
Although Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku missed shots before him, Mount still has 37 assists for Chelsea so far.
This is often cited by Gareth Southgate when asked why Mount is preferred over the more popular options in attacking midfield.
Creativity
While very capable in a more reserved midfield role, Mount is also a hugely creative player with a tangible end product.
Last season, he recorded a career-high 13 goals and 16 assists in 53 appearances; one goal participation every 1.83 games or one every 130.4 minutes.
He also generated 4.53 “shot creation actions” (passing, dribbling and fouls before a shot) per 90 – for comparison.
Modeled after Lampard’s example at Derby and Chelsea, Mount knows how to ‘crush’ the box to parry attacks and score unique long-range goals.
He also used his excellent passing and cross play in set pieces at Chelsea.
Tactical flexibility
These advantages – technical skills, speed of work and creativity – all apply to a variety of roles.
Mount was therefore a fixture among several managers at his club, as well as Southgate’s England.

Although Mount is only 24 years old, he has played many systems and acted as number 8, number 10 and left winger.
This tactical flexibility is invaluable for a manager changing systems in games.
When a manager changes systems mid-game, it’s usually one or two substitutions – using a player with different skills to change the approach. However, to do this successfully, there must already be players on the pitch with excellent game intelligence who can seamlessly adapt to a new role.
Mount is one of the best in the Premier League.
Anonymity
Wijnaldum’s comparison also extends to Mount’s flaws. The England midfielder can disappear in games and struggles to assert his quiet influence.
The current season is proof of that, with just three goals and six assists in 32 games in all competitions so far. In their recent dismal defeat to bottom-of-the-table Southampton, Mount struck the ball just 20 times in his 63 minutes, completing just half of his 12 pass attempts.
Obviously he plays in a very troubled Chelsea that is going through a difficult transition season.
He was also instrumental in last season’s double runs, losing twice to Liverpool in the League Cup and FA Cup finals, as well as a Champions League quarter-final.
His 53 caps came soon after a key role in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, while he also headed to Qatar for the mid-season World Cup.
It comes as no surprise to him that the key players from the three teams who played the most last season – Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City – all played below their best performances.
This is why every club wants Maison Mount☝️
Whether in the Chelsea blues or with the Red Devils, Mount will be a resurgent force after a summer break and a full pre-season.
While the addition of just one player is unlikely to change the ailing Manchester United or Liverpool midfield.
Bellingham remains the priority and the focus is naturally on the youngster from Dortmund, who has already been signed by Real Madrid.
But there’s certainly also a place for Mount if the deal goes through.

PSG set to sell it’s star Kylian Mbappé to Man Utd as Qatar takeover nears
Manchester United to sign Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain this summer should Sheikh Jassim’s takeover bid prove successful: PSG planning transfer
Paris Saint-Germain are set to sell Kylian Mbappé to Manchester United this summer if Sheikh Jassim’s Qatari-backed takeover bid for Old Trafford proves successful.
Mbappé will not sign a one-year contract extension into his contract with PSG, meaning his contract will expire in 12 months. Mirror Football understands the French club’s priority is to ensure he doesn’t leave without a transfer fee, meaning they are set to monetize the superstar this summer.
The French superstar has confirmed he intends to stay with the Ligue 1 champions beyond this summer, but it is clear PSG will push for his departure, aware the alternative is to lose a historic transfer fee altogether.
However, relations between the club and Real Madrid remain tense. That relationship deteriorated during the previous saga surrounding Mbappé’s future, when several transfer offers, especially public ones, for Real Madrid were rejected by the French club. The Blancos were hopeful of seeing Mbappé enter as a free agent in 2022, but he extended his contract in Paris.
Last weekend, Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, answered a question about a future move by Mbappé: “Yes. But not this year.” That announcement came just days before Mbappé outlined his future plans and could speed up a possible move to this summer, given Real Madrid’s needs and PSG’s intention to raise funds.
Real Madrid’s focus is now on the forwards after Karim Benzema confirmed his departure from the Spanish giants last week, while Eden Hazard, Asensio and Mariano Diaz – the latter of whom was the only recognized centre-forward in the first Real Madrid team – all leave as free agents this summer. However, it is Mbappé who holds the power. All signs are that he will leave Parc des Princes this summer and the French club’s QSI owner is preparing to sell the striker to United, according to El Pais, as they prefer to do business with Sheikh Jassim if his takeover offer were to be successful. . , then Madrid.
United are desperate for an elite striker this summer but have backed out of the move to their first-choice target Harry Kane, while the switch to Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is priceless. While Mbappé would claim an England record fee, relations between the two clubs could allow for a sensational deal.
Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi is believed to have played a key role in Sheikh Jassim’s bid to buy United. While the PSG boss insists his role would not go beyond offering advice, the shared Qatari track record and exact funding source behind United’s offer is the subject of a further examination.

“There are not many alternatives to Kane for Man Utd,” Saha said. “Victor Osimhen is an obvious one at the moment, though, he’s scoring a lot of goals for Napoli. Very fit, very strong and agile. But it may take him more time to adapt.
“There is a young boy in Hojlund at Atalanta. But no one offers the guarantees like Kane does.”
Osimhen is the leading scorer in Serie A, helping Napoli win their first league title since 1990, while 20-year-old talent Hojlund scored five goals in two Euro 2024 qualifiers for Denmark in March.
Another man linked with a move is Randal Kolo Muani. The Eintracht Frankfurt star scored for his country at the World Cup, but won’t come cheap with Bayern Munich also linked.
“I think Randal Muani would be a very good signing for Man Utd,” Saha added. “Not only as a number 9, he can play either side of a three. He’s a very clever player, very quick, sharp with his feet and very intelligent.
“He’s already established a good link with Kylian Mbappe for France. He’s aware of everything, he has the talent to go short or long, he’s very clever and he will be a real danger in the Premier League if he comes, especially with [Marcus] Rashford and [Jadon] Sancho.”
