The football transfer scene is abuzz with the name of Chelsea’s Mason Mount. Considered one of England’s brightest talents, the Cobham graduate has dazzled fans with his impressive technical ability, exceptional vision and unwavering dedication at Chelsea.

His unfaltering commitment to the game is evident in his tireless work rate and relentless pursuit of success, with this solidifying  his status as a player with immense talent, which may be why the midfielder is on the tabs of Manchester United.

Reports suggest that Mount has agreed to personal terms with Man United, adding fuel to the speculation surrounding his potential move to the club. While the details of these reported terms remain undisclosed, it is an encouraging sign that Mount is open to the possibility of joining Erik ten Hag’s side.

With speculation rising over Mason Mount’s departure from Chelsea this summer and with Manchester United and Liverpool closely linked, the question is where would the midfielder fit in at Old Trafford?
Manchester United are said to be in “pole position” to sign Mount, with the Chelsea man unable to agree a new contract, with reports suggesting a £50million price tag.
Of course, the Red Davils aren’t the only team interested in the 24-year-old, and there’s still a chance he could sign an extended contract with his boyhood club.
But as Manchester United moves forward with plans to rebuild their midfield, Mount’s name has many fans talking.

Thinking within the boxes

Mount is an exceptional technical and athletic talent, his great intensity and intelligence off the ball matched by top quality in possession.
Mount made his breakthrough at Chelsea under Frank Lampard in 2019-20 and was part of a 4-3-3 attack.

Usually deployed as one of two number 8s in midfield, Mount performed similarly to the title-winning iteration of Gini Wijnaldum.

The left-back finds Mount in the left-half space and he again uses his upper body well to resist the challenge, giving Chelsea’s attacking players time to push forward. Once Chilwell overlaps, Mount uses clever dexterity to outmaneuver him.

After Mendy and Chilwell meet again, Mount receives again – this time with room to turn, plays a wonderful through ball and sets up the winner for Havertz.
Although Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku missed shots before him, Mount still has 37 assists for Chelsea so far.

Creativity

While very capable in a more reserved midfield role, Mount is also a hugely creative player with a tangible end product.
Last season, he recorded a career-high 13 goals and 16 assists in 53 appearances; one goal participation every 1.83 games or one every 130.4 minutes.
He also generated 4.53 “shot creation actions” (passing, dribbling and fouls before a shot) per 90 – for comparison.

Modeled after Lampard’s example at Derby and Chelsea, Mount knows how to ‘crush’ the box to parry attacks and score unique long-range goals.

He also used his excellent passing and cross play in set pieces at Chelsea.

Tactical flexibility

These advantages – technical skills, speed of work and creativity – all apply to a variety of roles.
Mount was therefore a fixture among several managers at his club, as well as Southgate’s England.

Although Mount is only 24 years old, he has played many systems and acted as number 8, number 10 and left winger.

Anonymity

Wijnaldum’s comparison also extends to Mount’s flaws. The England midfielder can disappear in games and struggles to assert his quiet influence.
The current season is proof of that, with just three goals and six assists in 32 games in all competitions so far. In their recent dismal defeat to bottom-of-the-table Southampton, Mount struck the ball just 20 times in his 63 minutes, completing just half of his 12 pass attempts.

Obviously he plays in a very troubled Chelsea that is going through a difficult transition season.
He was also instrumental in last season’s double runs, losing twice to Liverpool in the League Cup and FA Cup finals, as well as a Champions League quarter-final.

His 53 caps came soon after a key role in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, while he also headed to Qatar for the mid-season World Cup.
It comes as no surprise to him that the key players from the three teams who played the most last season – Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City – all played below their best performances.

While the addition of just one player is unlikely to change the ailing Manchester United or Liverpool midfield.

Real Madrid’s focus is now on the forwards after Karim Benzema confirmed his departure from the Spanish giants last week, while Eden Hazard, Asensio and Mariano Diaz – the latter of whom was the only recognized centre-forward in the first Real Madrid team – all leave as free agents this summer. However, it is Mbappé who holds the power.
