Wolves boss slammed offícals believes VAR missed ‘blatant’ Onana foul

Burley, Nicol blast officials for not awarding Wolves a penalty late (1:05)

Craig Burley and Stevie Nicol both can’t believe a penalty wasn’t awarded to Wolves in the last minutes of their loss to Manchester United. (1:05)

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been issued an apology after a decision not to give a penalty during their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, according to manager Gary O’Neil.

André Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic in stoppage time at Old Trafford, but on-field referee Simon Hooper did not see a reason to award a penalty.

After going to the VAR, Michael Salisbury checked and cleared the incident after deciding it was not a clear and obvious error, but O’Neil claimed afterwards that Select Group 1 Manager of the PGMOL, Jonathan Moss, admitted it was a mistake.

“I was told live that they didn’t think that it was a clear and obvious error,” said O’Neil. “But having spoken to Jonathan Moss, and fair play to him for coming straight out, he has apologised and said it was a blatant penalty that should have been awarded to the Wolves.

“I feel sad because he has come out honestly to explain the error. I spent the afternoon with him, trying to understand the new guidelines and trying not to get myself booked with the new guidelines, which I failed to adhere.

“Fair play to Jon saying it was a clear and obvious error. He can’t believe the on-field referee didn’t award it and VAR clip didn’t intervene. That probably makes me feel even worse at the moment. Once you know you’re right, you feel even worse leaving with nothing.”

Wolverhampton were not luky to come away with no result from the game after a nice performance, having 23 shots against United, including six on target. O’Neill said he felt Onana could have “taken our striker’s head off” with the challenge, but United boss Erik ten Hag disagrees with that.

“When VAR looked at it and decided not to give it, of course we are pleased with it,” Ten Hag said. “I don’t feel I have to react on his [O’Neil’s] interpretation. It’s up to the referee and the VAR to make final decisions on the match.

“I think the two players from Wolves collided and Andre didn’t interfere with the action from both of the players. First is the touch of the ball and then came Andre.”

In a much wild game from the wolves, Raphaël Varane scored the only goal of the match in the Premier League opener for both teams that gave Ten Hag’s side all three points to start their season.

Wolves’ shot total was the second most against United at Old Trafford since data was first collected 20 years ago, which O’Neil said was reality to his side’s confidence to attack.

Wolves boss has praised his side saying ,”In the end we can’t just concentrate on that [penalty] decision,” O’Neil said. “To come to Old Trafford and have the most shots of any side since 2005 and dominate after just four days of work [in training] is exceptional. The lads deserved more praises tonight.”

Man Utd Alvaro Fernandez could leave the club on a permanent basis this summer with Premier League duo West Ham and Burnley among the clubs circulating for a move

Man Utd will listen to offers of £6million for defender Alvaro Fernandez with six clubs monitoring his situation – including West Ham and Burnley.

Fernandez, who spent last season on loan at Preston in the Championship, has been involved in pre-season training for United. The 20-year-old had been likely to go out on loan once again this season, while Ten Hag had wanted a closer look at the Spaniard to evaluate his progress.

The 20-year-old joined the Manchester United from Real Madrid back in 2020 but he has yet to make a competitive outing for United’s first team. After more than 40 appearances in Premier League 2, though, he secured a loan move to Preston – where he provided six assists – a year ago to give him a taste of senior football.

The former Spain Under-19 international impressed during a season at Deepdale in which he made 42 appearances. His pathway to United’s first-team is hard due to the presence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, while Brandon Williams still at Old Trafford and Diogo Dalot can play left-back.

The Red Devils are considering cashing-in on Fernandez permanently, although believe he has a long-term future at the top end of the game. The club would be keen to add a buyback clause in any sale, while they will not rule out a loan deal.

They value the Spaniard at £6million and are aware of interest in his signature. Premier League duo West Ham and Burnley are both monitoring his situation, while Relevo report how four other clubs – three of them from Spain – are also tracking Fernandez.

Newly-promoted duo Granada Las Palmas are both interested in a deal, while Espanyol – who are aiming for promotion at the first attempt following a shock relegation from the Spanish top-flight – are also keen. Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt are also credited with an interest.

Fernandez showed impressive form in pre-season for Man United

Fernandez has a year remaining on his Manchester United contract and the club have an option to extend that arrangement by a further year. There is no rush on United’s behalf to let go the player, but will not block his path to first-team football.

However, United would be keen to retain an option on his future due to the potential they believe he possesses. Erik ten Hag has promoted Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to United’s first-team squad, while Hannibal Mejbri is also ready for first-team involvement this campaign.

Chelsea vs Liverpool player ratings Performance : Know the man of the match

The Chelsea vs Liverpool player ratings were a lot of fun to dish out as two big six teams both went for it at Stamford Bridge. The outcome was amazing.

A 1-1 draw saw Luis Diaz score early after a strong start from Liverpool but Axel Disasi equalized and both teams had several chances to win in the west London sunshine.

Below we give marks out of 10 for every player, as the two Premier League heavyweights put on a fantastic show going forward but their limitations, especially in defensive midfield, were clear to see.

    Chelsea player ratings performance (3-5-2)

Robert Sanchez: 6 – Didn’t have much to do but distribution was good and accurate. As always. Good claim at a corner late on to start a counter where he helped Chelsea almost won it.

Axel Disasi: 7 – Got a Premier League debut goal and looked pretty solid defensively. Good start seen from him.

Thiago Silva: 7 – Always in the right position and at the age of 38 keeps getting better.

Levi Colwill: 6 – Had a tough time against Mohamed Salah in the first half but better in the second. Needs to improve distribution.

Reece James: 7.5 – Such an attacking force and this wing-back role allows him to stay forward for longer. Subbed off in second half as it looked like he had a small knock.

Enzo Fernandez: 8 – Linked up really well with James and Sterling. His class on the ball is clear and he is the heartbeat of this Chelsea side. Man of the match goes to him.

Conor Gallagher: 6 – Worked hard in a deeper central midfield role but couldn’t impact the game.

Carney Chukwuemeka: 6 – Some nice touches when he did get on the ball and improved as game went on.

Ben Chilwell: 7 – Assist on Disasi’s goal, thought he had one himself but ruled out for offside. Fantastic energy and got forward so well.

Raheem Sterling: 7 – Worked hard and linked up well with James but the final pass or cross just didn’t happen for him.

Nicolas Jackson: 6 – See above. Plenty of good runs behind Liverpool’s defense but missed his one big chance from six yards out in the first half. Worked so hard up top and his brilliant work on the counter almost led to a late, late winner.

    Substitutes

Malo Gusto (76′ on for James): 6 – Did okay defensively at right back.
Mykhailo Mudryk (81′ on for Sterling): 5 – Couldn’t impact the game and Jackson couldn’t quite find him to score a late winner.
Ian Maatsen (81′ on for Chukwuemeka): 6 – Worked hard but didn’t get on the ball enough.
Lesley Ugochukwu (90′ on for Chilwell): N/A

    Liverpool player ratings performance (4-3-3)

Alisson: 6 – Didn’t have much to do but did well to smother Jackson’s first half effort.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: 6 – Lovely ball forward for Salah’s disallowed goal. Involved heavily early on but faded. Did he switch off for Disasi’s goal? Klopp was angry with some of his distribution choices.

Ibrahima Konate: 6 – Caught out by Jackson’s pace on a few occasions and was dragged out of position as he stepped high.

Virgil van Dijk: 6 – One rasping effort which just flew over. Defensively okay but at times Jackson exposed his dwindling pace.

Andy Robertson: 5 – Had a tough outing. James and Sterling cut him out and with little defensive help from Gakpo ahead of him.

Alexis Mac Allister: 6 – Pinged a lovely ball out to Salah for Diaz’s goal but then faded. Couldn’t firmly control the tempo of the game from a deeper role. Late on he got a simple pass wrong with Nunez clean through.

Dominik Szoboszlai: 7 – Very impressive debut. Lovely balance on the ball, great energy shown in midfield and was very good in the first half. Promising.

Cody Gakpo: 5 – Struggled to insert his presence in the game from a deeper position in midfield. Worked hard but aside from one run he struggled.

Mohamed Salah: 7 – Lovely ball to Diaz for the early goal, but VAR ruled it out for a slight offside. Subbed off in the second half and wasn’t delighted by it. Had the beating of Colwill in the first half. He assisted Luis Diaz to score and that makes him the man of the match for Liverpool side.

Diogo Jota: 5 – Really struggled at the start to get up to the pace of the game in a more central role. Took a heavy whack in the first half and subbed off early in the second.

Luis Diaz: 7 – Took his goal well and made some dangerous runs in-behind from the left.

    Substitutes

Darwin Nunez (66′ on for Jota): 6 – Smashed a shot which deflected just wide late on.
Curtis Jones (66′ on for Gakpo): 6 – Worked hard to get on the ball and made some good runs.
Harvey Elliott (77′ on for Salah): 6 – Busy as ever and tried to get on the ball.
Ben Doak (77′ on for Diaz): 6 – Did his best to shore things up defensively.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have disagreed over Wolves’ last-minute penalty shout during Man United’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The visitors were almost awarded a late penalty when goalkeeper Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic when trying to claim a high ball into the box. But after a lengthy VAR review, the on-field decision from referee Simon Hooper stood.

Man United legend Neville insisted that Onana ‘knew what he was doing’ during the collision, and could easily have conceded a stoppage time penalty – although Carragher disagreed, as they argued the point on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

Neville said: ‘The reason why I thought it was a penalty was because I don’t think Onana was anywhere near the ball. He was always under it, he was always getting there – so I think he could have made the decision before he jumped.

‘Look, I always used to say if my keeper was coming out, take everything with you and clatter the lot and he’s done that so in some ways…’

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville had opposing views on Wolves’ possible penalty on Monday

Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana clattered into Wolves’ Sasa Kalajdzic in stoppage time

Presenter David Jones jumped in at this point to confirm: ‘Yes he has!’

Neville continued: ‘No no, that’s what I would want my keeper to do if he was coming out – take the lot with you.

‘But the problem is he’s done that and the problem is he’s nowhere near the ball so in some ways I think he has in a calculated fashion decided that he’s just going to try and disturb, as much as he can, the attacking player and try to put him off so I do think it was a penalty as he wasn’t near enough to the ball.

‘If they had arrived at the same time it and it had been one of those where he’s just missed the ball, just over his finger, that’s a different story. I think he knew what he was doing.’

But when Jones asked Carragher if he agreed, the former Liverpool defender said: ‘I’m not sure. When I initially saw it and when it hadn’t been given as a penalty I didn’t think there was any way in the world that it was going to be over-turned.

‘I didn’t think it was that big of a mistake, you’re talking about wanting to keep the referee’s decision on the pitch.

It was a blow for Gary O’Neil’s visitors, who played well, but ultimately left with nothing

‘I think once the referee hadn’t given it I didn’t think it was that big of a mistake for them to overturn – so I didn’t expect him to go and over turn it at the screen, no.’

It was a tough blow for Gary O’Neil’s visitors, who were strong opposition for Man United, with a raft of their own chances. However, Wolves ultimately left with nothing.

However, their fans will have confidence that they can ride out the rest of the season, starting with a home match against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Man United’s next Premier League game is later that evening, when they visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
