David de Gea teases Casemiro after Manchester United score superb goal against Bournemouth
Man United took a big step into the top four with Saturday’s 1-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium
David de Gea has identified Casemiro as a surprise solution to Manchester United’s goalscoring problems – and joked that the Brazilian should be used as a striker.
Casemiro scored the game’s only goal after nine minutes as United beat Bournemouth 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday. The 31-year-old netted a brilliantly improvised spot-kick from close range after Cherries defender Marcos Senesi touched Christian Eriksen’s ball.
United’s usual contact Marcus Rashford was absent from the South Coast due to illness. The Reds talisman has scored 29 goals this season, almost three times as many as anyone else at the club. Anthony Martial was relatively ineffectual for 57 minutes and his replacement Wout Weghorst is yet to score in the Premier League. And De Gea suggested an option in left field to take the lead.
“Before coming here we knew that winning today means a lot,” De Gea said after the end of the season. “We put in a really good performance and scored a great goal. We suffered at the end, but away from home it’s a huge three points.” “Certainly the first 25 minutes were crucial, it was a perfect start and then we could be calm and play our football. It’s a big win.

United are unlikely to be without Rashford for long as the 25-year-old had recovered from the leg injury that kept him from beating Wolves last week before falling ill on Friday. He did not travel to the Vitality Stadium with the squad but could be available for Thursday’s game against Chelsea. A point or more at Old Trafford would secure Champions League football for next season after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.
