Manchester United are eyeing a summer bid for Jordan Pickford as he looks to adjust his position as goalkeeper as David de Gea’s position is unclear and a new deal has not yet been signed

Erik ten Hag wants Manchester United to use the FA Cup final defeat as motivation

Manchester United are reportedly preparing a bid for Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

The Red Devils are looking to sort out their goalkeeping situation for next season and a move to England’s No1 could lead to a change at Old Trafford. David de Gea has been United’s first choice since he joined the club in 2011, but his future is unclear.

The Spaniard is yet to sign a new contract, although the deal is believed to be close. Regardless of what he chooses to do, United are still keen to go after the Everton shooter who has been instrumental in keeping the Toffees in the Premier League with some great performances. Desperate to sign a goalkeeper who can challenge De Gea, reports The Sun, Erik ten Hag is ready to test Everton’s resolve with an offer of around £30million, something for the Merseyside side who wish that amount spent could be considered acceptable to bring him from Sunderland in 2017. Tom Heaton, currently at Old Trafford, could still move the other way to Goodison Park as part of a deal.

Pickford is keen to play in the Champions League and United could offer him that chance after finishing third last season. Dean Henderson, who spent the year on loan at Nottingham Forest, could also leave Manchester permanently, leaving Ten Hag in need of reinforcements.

De Gea’s position has come under criticism in recent seasons, raising doubts over his future and there is growing interest from the Middle East targeting the biggest names in the game. The goalkeeper is set to take a significant pay cut on his hefty salary as criticism continues to come at him. He was under scrutiny after scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final.

Ilkay Gundogan’s volley passed him in the second half at Wembley, but Ten Hag refused to publicly criticize his goalkeeper, who had won the Premier League Golden Glove award a week earlier. “At the moment I don’t want to talk about such criticisms because we all played a great season, including David de Gea, he played a fantastic season,” he said.

The Spaniard, who previously won the club’s player of the year four times in five years, sees his performances increasingly fraught with mistakes. He made a huge mistake earlier this year as United were beaten 4-0 at Brentford.

Ten Hag were keen to bring in a goalkeeper capable of challenging De Gea, with many of the club’s students serving solely as a substitute for him during the Spaniard’s time at Old Trafford. Martin Dubravka was loaned out last season but was rarely used.
