JJ Gabriel Shines in U18 Derby Win as Michael Carrick Watches U16 Defeat Alongside Kai Rooney

Highly rated youngster JJ Gabriel delivered an eye-catching performance as Manchester United Under-18s secured an impressive 3-1 derby victory over Manchester City.

Gabriel was among the standout performers in a confident display from United’s U18 side, showcasing his technical quality and attacking intent in one of the academy calendar’s biggest fixtures. The young forward continues to enhance his growing reputation at Carrington, with coaches and supporters increasingly taking notice of his composure and creativity in high-pressure games.

The derby atmosphere was heightened further by events on the adjacent pitch, where United’s Under-16s were in action at the same time. Watching from the sidelines was former United midfielder and current Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick, who was there to support his son, Jacey Carrick.

Unfortunately for Carrick and the U16 side, it was a tougher outing. United’s U16s suffered a 4-2 defeat, with Jacey Carrick and Kai Rooney — son of club legend Wayne Rooney — both involved in the contest. Despite flashes of promise, the younger age group could not replicate the success of their U18 counterparts.

The contrast between the two matches underlined the different stages of development within the academy. While the U18s demonstrated cohesion and maturity in their derby triumph, the U16s encountered the kind of learning experience that forms a crucial part of youth progression.

For JJ Gabriel, however, the day represented another significant step forward. Performing strongly in a Manchester derby at U18 level highlights both his temperament and his technical ability. With eligibility to feature for the senior squad this season, his continued progress will be closely monitored by those within the club’s hierarchy.

Meanwhile, Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick remain key figures in the younger age group, continuing their development within United’s academy structure. Setbacks at youth level are part of the process, and both players will be looking to respond positively in upcoming fixtures.

Overall, it was a day of mixed fortunes at Carrington — a statement derby win for the U18s, and a valuable learning curve for the U16s — watched on by one of the club’s former midfield generals.
