BREAKING: Saints finalizing one-year deal with DE Cam Jordan, returning for his 16th season in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints and defensive end Cameron Jordan are finalizing a one-year contract that will bring the franchise’s all-time sack leader back for a 16th season, a move that ensures the eight-time Pro Bowler will likely spend his entire career with one team .
The deal, which is expected to be incentive-laden, was agreed upon Tuesday after Jordan visited the Saints’ facility on the first day of mandatory minicamp . Jordan later announced his return on social media, confirming he would be back for “one final season” .
“There’s no amount of money in the league that can make me say, ‘Just turn your back on everything that you built,'” Jordan said Tuesday . “This is where I wanted to be and got back here.”
A deal years in the making
The agreement ends months of uncertainty that began when Jordan’s previous contract automatically voided in March, making him an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career . While Jordan expressed openness to exploring the market, the 36-year-old defensive end never wavered in his preference to remain in New Orleans .
Negotiations, however, proved complicated. Jordan had taken a pay cut to remain with the Saints last season, but his resurgent 2025 campaign — in which he recorded 10.5 sacks — gave him leverage he hadn’t had in recent years .
“The Saints have done nothing but show that they want me to be here,” Jordan said after the season. “Now, at what price? Some would say half off, this last year. Can’t do that again” .
General manager Mickey Loomis and head coach Kellen Moore ultimately bridged the financial gap. Jordan acknowledged Tuesday that the Saints’ offer wasn’t the most lucrative he received but said loyalty prevailed.
“The loyalty streak has always run deep with me,” Jordan said . “It was mutual benefit for us to come back. The way that I want to affect this city. I don’t think that’s ever going to stop.”
A legacy cemented in black and gold
Drafted 24th overall out of California in 2011, Jordan has become one of the most decorated players in franchise history. His 132 career sacks rank 17th in NFL history since sacks became an official statistic in 1982 and stand as the most by any player in Saints history .
Jordan surpassed Rickey Jackson last season to claim the franchise record. With 6.5 more sacks in 2026, he would crack the top 10 in league history .
His 2025 performance — 10.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles — marked his seventh double-digit sack season and first since 2021 . The production was all the more remarkable considering he turned 36 during the season and saw his snap count reduced to approximately 45.7% after Chase Young returned from injury .
“Did we expect 10½ sacks from him?” Loomis said after the season. “No, I wouldn’t say that we expected that, but I’m excited for him” .
Jordan has played a franchise-record 243 games with 242 starts, and his eight Pro Bowl selections are the most by a defensive player in Saints history . He and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Smith are the only two players in NFL history to lead the same team in sacks in double-digit seasons .
Family, community and unfinished business
Jordan’s return is about more than statistics. The defensive captain for the past decade has been the Saints’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award three times (2017, 2021, 2024) for his extensive community work through the Cam Jordan Foundation, which emphasizes youth development, education and mentorship .
Jordan noted that his four children have been born and raised in New Orleans, making the Crescent City home in ways that transcend football .
“It’s become home for us,” he said, adding that it would “feel wrong to be in another city, not giving back to this city” .
Saints fans can rest easy knowing Jordan will remain a fixture in the community. During the season, he habitually uses his off day to visit schools around New Orleans .
“I’m definitely going to take to this like every game is my last, every play,” Jordan said .
Fit in Kellen Moore’s defense
Jordan returns to a defensive front that has been reshaped during the offseason. The Saints traded for former first-round pick Tyree Wilson and signed free agent Anfernee Jennings . Jordan is expected to continue in a rotational role similar to 2025, playing roughly half the defensive snaps while providing a veteran presence .
Despite the additions, Jordan expressed confidence in his ability to contribute. “There’s nobody (the Saints acquired) who produced the way I did last year, so,” Jordan told the Times-Picayune in April. “My talent speaks for itself” .
Under first-year defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, Jordan thrived in 2025 after being outspoken about his role under the previous coaching staff .
One final ride
Jordan, who turns 37 on July 10, called the 2026 season his final campaign, ending speculation about how much longer the future Hall of Famer might play .
“We are officially married forever,” Jordan said Tuesday before signing the contract .
The Saints are coming off a 6-11 season that ended with a four-game winning streak, fueling optimism for 2026 . Quarterback Tyler Shough emerged late in the season, giving the franchise hope for the post-Drew Brees era .
“When you look at our roster, you see the growth,” Jordan said. “If I can push my teammates to be the best version of them, how much farther can we go as a team?”
Jordan’s return maintains continuity for a defense that played its best football down the stretch in 2025. Former teammates and current players reached out to encourage his return, including Mark Ingram, Craig Robertson and Demario Davis, whom Jordan called his “main three ‘get your a– back in the building’ guys” .
Drew Brees also offered encouragement, telling Jordan: “Black and gold bleeds forever” .
For Saints fans, seeing No. 94 in another uniform would have felt wrong. Now, they get one more year with a player who has defined their defense for a generation.
