CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina head coach Michael Malone addressed the ongoing eligibility saga surrounding fifth-year transfer center Cameron Fens, delivering clarity following a legal setback that has cast uncertainty over UNC’s frontcourt rotation.
Speaking to media members inside the Dean E. Smith Center, Malone confirmed that while Fens remains ineligible for live game action due to a court stay, the 7-foot, 255-pound big man is fully cleared to participate in all team activities short of game competition.
The Legal Setback
The administrative limbo stems from an order issued by the Tennessee Court of Appeals, which stayed a previous injunction that had temporarily granted a fifth season of eligibility to several college athletes across the country, including Fens.
Fens, who spent his first two collegiate seasons at UIC before transferring to South Dakota, posted career highs during his senior year with the Coyotes:

Malone laid out Fens’ current standing within the program without mincing words.

All of those things will take care of themselves in the coming weeks. But the luxury that we have is that he is cleared to practice, play and be a part of this team.”
