INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has once again publicly shared her personal faith and her vision for a future marriage, stating clearly that she holds to a biblical view of marriage and wants a husband who will serve as the spiritual leader of their home and lead their future children to love God.
The 30-year-old WNBA star made the comments during a recent podcast appearance, and her remarks have drawn widespread attention this week. In the interview, Cunningham was direct about what she is looking for in a future spouse, emphasizing that faith is her top priority.
Faith Comes First
“I’m not shy about it,” Cunningham said on the podcast. “I grew up in Missouri… I went through my crazy party phase. But at this point, my No. 1 requirement is I want someone who pushes me toward Christ.”
She went further: “If you’re not serious about that, if you’re not talking about faith, then don’t talk to me. My No. 1 requirement is I want you to lead our home, lead me, and lead our future children to serve and love a good God.”
Cunningham’s vision of marriage aligns with the traditional Christian teaching that a husband is called to be the spiritual leader of the family. She has previously been re-baptized and said she wanted to do so “as an adult, of my own accord,” demonstrating the seriousness of her faith.
Single and Open
At the time of her comments, Cunningham confirmed she is currently single. She admitted she rarely dates and suggested she may give off an “intimidating” impression.
“People don’t really approach me. I don’t really go on dates. I think maybe I give off an intimidating vibe, and that might be the problem,” she said.
Still, Cunningham made clear she is not closed off: “I have a lot of guy friends. I’m open to possibilities.”

Cunningham currently plays for the Indiana Fever, averaging 8.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while shooting 43.4 percent from three-point range this season. She was selected 13th overall in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury and joined the Fever in 2025 via a four-team trade. In the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup championship game, she scored 13 points to help the Fever win the franchise’s first Commissioner’s Cup title.
Beyond her play on the court, Cunningham has drawn attention for her outspoken personality.
