Less than six months later, that question has an answer. North Carolina isn’t just competing for the 2027 class. The Tar Heels are building the infrastructure to make an elite haul feel inevitable.
The Visits Tell the Story
Recruiting is about relationships, but relationships are proven on campus. And the visits are stacking up at a rate Chapel Hill hasn’t seen in years.
CJ Rosser, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 class according to Rivals, took his official visit to North Carolina in September—the first stop on a fall tour that also includes Kentucky, Louisville, Arkansas, NC State, USC, and Miami . The Rocky Mount native, who now plays at Southeastern Prep in Florida, is the crown jewel of the class and a player Malone contacted mere hours after being hired .
Joining him on campus that same weekend was Jordan Page, a five-star wing from IMG Academy ranked No. 10 nationally by 247Sports . Page, who starred at Broughton High School in Raleigh before transferring to IMG, represents the kind of hometown get that can shift a program’s trajectory .
And the visits keep coming. Beckham Black, the No. 1 overall recruit according to 247Sports, has official visits set to North Carolina and Texas—the first two schools on his list . Nasir Anderson, the No. 8 overall prospect and a five-star point guard, is scheduled to visit Chapel Hill over Halloween weekend . Darius Wabbington, a five-star center ranked No. 12 overall, has his official visit locked in for October 30-November 1 .
When elite prospects schedule visits, they are signaling genuine interest. When they cancel other visits to focus on your program, they are signaling something more. Wabbington canceled his scheduled visit to Louisville in September, a move that removed a conference rival from contention and cleared a path for the Tar Heels .
The Offers Reflect a National Net
North Carolina has extended scholarship offers to 12 players in the 2027 class, and the list reads like a recruiting rankings top-15 . The Tar Heels have offers out to Beckham Black, CJ Rosser, Demarcus Henry, Darius Wabbington, Jordan Page, Nasir Anderson, Navorro Bowman Jr., Lewis Uvwo, Asa Montgomery, Adan Diggs, King Gibson, and Paul Osaruyi .
This is not a staff throwing darts at a board. It is a staff that has identified nearly every top-15 player in the class and gotten into the conversation with almost all of them.
Demarcus Henry, the No. 3 overall prospect and top-ranked small forward, has spoken openly about his interest. “The whole coaching staff is reaching out, and it means a lot,” Henry said. “I grew up in North Carolina, so those North Carolina blue bloods are dream schools of mine” . On3’s Joe Tipton has already predicted Henry will land at UNC .
The Momentum Is Real
Multiple predictions have connected North Carolina to elite 2027 prospects. On3’s Jamie Shaw predicted the Tar Heels will land both Rosser and Henry . 247Sports’ Eric Bossi noted that Malone and his staff are “putting a lot of effort” into Rosser and Page, and that they’re “making pretty serious inroads with those two” .
Those predictions are not guarantees. But they reflect a consensus that North Carolina is no longer on the outside looking in. The Tar Heels are legitimate contenders for multiple five-star prospects—and possibly the favorites for several.
Why “Virtually Guaranteeing” Is Not Hyperbole
No one can guarantee a recruiting class. Prospects decommit. Coaches leave. Injuries happen. But “virtually guaranteeing” means North Carolina has done everything within its control to make an elite class the most likely outcome.
The head coach has NBA championship credibility. The assistant staff—led by Chuck Martin, poached from John Calipari’s staff at Arkansas—has decades of recruiting relationships . The program has the brand, the history, and the resources. And the visits are happening.
If North Carolina lands even two of the top five players in 2027, it is a victory. If it lands three, it is a program-altering class. Given the current trajectory, three is no longer a dream. It is a realistic expectation.
