Liverpool flop Alberto Aquilani wins his FIFTH trophy in his third year as coach – more than he’s won in his ENTIRE playing career – after his side defeated Fiorentina U19 Inter Milan to win the Supercoppa Primaver.

Former Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani has already surpassed his prize pool when he was a player, after winning his fifth trophy in just three years since taking charge of Fiorentina’s Under 19 side.

Aquilani took charge in July 2020, needing just a month to claim his first silverware in the form of the Coppa Italia Primeavera.

Two more followed and a Supercoppa Primavera and he has now conquered a fifth.

lAquilani won his second Primavera Super Cup on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan.

That means he has already passed the total number of trophies he won as a player (4). The Italian made his name at Roma before moving to Liverpool in 2009 for £20m.

Three years later, however, he walked away as one of the Reds’ biggest flops of the modern era.

The midfielder made just 28 appearances in his two seasons with the Reds’ first team and after Roy Hodgson avoided him, he sought out loan spells at Juventus and Milan before making a permanent move to Fiorentina.

Aquilani occasionally impressed in his first season at Anfield, also scoring in the Reds’ Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

But then manager Rafa Benitez left the club at the end of Aquilani’s first season with Merseyside and his successor Hodgson made it clear the Italian had fallen down the pecking order. Hodgson reportedly told Aquilani that he preferred Joe Cole to his position and selected him for just two games in the early stages of the 2010/11 season before loaning him to Juve.

Aquilani has now revealed he is frustrated that Liverpool fans will always remember him as a flop.

“I had a big contract at Liverpool,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Maybe I could have stayed and not played next year. No problem. But I would never do that there. I tried to find a solution that worked for me and for the club. All time.

“Some players have a big contract and just stay and run around the training ground, but it wasn’t good for me. (Then director of football Damien) Comolli and the people who worked there can tell you. “Milan arrived then and don’t pay too much. No problem, I’m leaving because I want to play. It’s frustrating because now they remember me as a bad player.

“They spent a lot of money, but I didn’t overdo it. It’s frustrating, but it’s the reality and there’s nothing I can do about it.

The midfielder also made 38 appearances for his country, scoring five goals.
