Football Digest: Harry Maguire stripped of Man Utd captaincy
Things are getting hectic at Manchester United as the new Premier League season approaches.
The Red Devils have already acquired Mason Mount from Chelsea in an initial deal worth £55m and are looking to make further signings to bolster Erik ten Hag’s squad ahead of the 2023/24 season. Next through the door is Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, with whom United have signed a deal, the details of which are now coming out.
There is also the case of players being taken off the books, with Harry Maguire potentially leading a wave of exits following Ten Hag’s decision to strip him of the captaincy. United are also in talks to extend the contracts of a number of players and a major breakthrough has been achieved in talks with Marcus Rashford. Here’s a roundup of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.
Onana Agreement Details
According to various reports, Andre Onana will initially cost Manchester United €50m (£42.9m) plus possible add-ons of €5m (£4.2m). After agreeing personal terms, the 27-year-old Cameroon goalkeeper is also set to sign a five-year deal with an option for a further year.
Onana’s arrival, which club officials want to confirm this week, is set to impact the future of two Red Devils goalkeepers, Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton. While relegated Henderson is set to join Nottingham Forest on a permanent basis and earn around £30million, veteran Heaton is also wanted by Luton following his promotion to the top flight. Maguire decides to go out
Harry Maguire is furious after being stripped of his captaincy and will now push to leave United, claims the Sun. The 30-year-old centre-back was “angry, shocked and upset”. Ten Hag informed him that another player will wear the armband for the 2023/24 season.
With Maguire previously linked with moves to Tottenham and West Ham, the report says Chelsea are considering making an offer. However, the Reds won’t let him go cheaply as they spent a record £80m to sign him from Leicester in 2019, making him the most expensive defender ever.
Breakthrough in Rashford’s contract
Marcus Rashford is finally set to sign a new contract at Old Trafford after agreeing a tentative five-year deal with the club. Rashford, 25, has reached the final 12 months of his current £200,000-a-week deal but will sign contract extensions soon.
The England international has turned down lucrative offers from rival Premier League clubs and overseas teams, according to the Athletic report. Instead, Rashford has pledged his future at United until 2028 and wants to be part of Ten Hag’s long-term project following his 30-goal season last year.
