Manchester United’s nightmare start to their Champions League campaign continued with defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday.Having suffered a 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich in their opener, Erik ten Hag’s side were hoping to get back on track against the Turkish giants. Despite going both 1-0 and 2-1 up, they weren’t able to claim a single point, whilst Casemiro was also given another red card.

Banner restored after vandalism from Galatasaray fans

Manchester United’s ‘honour and glory’ Sir Matt Busby banner at Old Trafford has been reinstated after being torn down by Galatasaray fans after Tuesday’s Champions League tie.

Club staff have retrieved the ripped-off section, with the banner now fully back in place.

Onana considers international U-turn

Andre Onana is considering a second retirment from international football to focus on regaining his form at Manchester United.

After being called into the national squad for the October games with Russia and Senegal, ESPN is now reporting the keeper will hold talks with Cameroon bosses over his potential involvement in AFCON in January.

United duo nominated for Premier League award

Bruno Fernandes and Hannibal Mejbri are up for the Premier League’s September Goal of the Month Award.

Majbri’s goal in the 3-1 loss to Brighton is a contender, as is the sublime winner struck by Fernandes at Burnley.

‘Man Utd are a shambles on and off the pitch’

Manchester United have lost six of their 10 games this season, hopes of a title push over for another year, while they will be lucky to make it out of the Champions League group stage after opening with two defeats.

On and off the pitch, United are a shambles. On the pitch, their players lack form, belief and unity, while off it, disciplinary issues have overshadowed their start to the season, with the proposed takeover of the club having stalled and reviled owners the Glazers still milking it for cash.

Man Utd duo in England squad

Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for fixtures against Australia and Italy.

Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford are the only Manchester United players in the 26-man squad.

Mitoma signing new Brighton deal

Brighton are close to tying Kaoru Mitoma down to a new contract to ward off transfer interest from Premier League rivals.

Manchester United are among the sides to have shown an interest in the Japan international.

Ten Hag tipped to move back to Ajax

Former Ajax striker Kenneth Perez believes it’s “not a crazy idea” to imagine Erik ten Hag back at Ajax amid growing pressure on the Manchester United boss.

Ten Hag enjoyed significant success during his time in Amsterdam, winning multiple Eredivisie titles and taking his team within a minute of the Champions League final in 2019. His achievements caught the attention of United, who gave him the top job in 2022 and finished third in his maiden campaign.

Things have been tougher this term, though, with Ten Hag’s team losing four from seven in the league and two from two in the Champions League. Results have brought questions over the manager’s future, and Perez is thinking big as Ajax endure struggles of their own in the Netherlands.

Man Utd ‘lacking leaders’

Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes the current struggles come down to the fact that there are no leaders on the pitch.

“The defensive line is out of shape from time to time, the communication isn’t there and the leadership isn’t there,” Berbatov told Betfair. “You look at Raphael Varane, who has won pretty much everything, he needs to be a commanding figure in the team but he’s struggling as well.

“When you play for Man United, you must be a leader in your own way. Everyone must also take responsibility and ownership of their mistakes.

“When it comes to the big clubs, there will always be a certain few players that are always highlighted. A team is one machine, so when the team isn’t playing well, your star players will suffer too.”

Casemiro ‘asked to do too much’

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes Casemiro’s team-mates need to pull their weight to prevent the Brazilian from being forced to do everything.

Casemiro impressed last season but has found things tougher this time around, and was sent off in Tuesday’s loss to Galatasaray.

“The team is asking too much of him at this moment in time and other players need to step up and perform,” Saha told Betfred.

“Players such as Mason Mount need to provide Manchester United with creativity to allow Casemiro to perform his primary job of protecting the defence.”

Bruno’s exhausting workload in focus

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has made more appearances than any other player in the world in the past year, according to FIFPRO, the players’ union.

The skipper at Old Trafford has continued to turn up for club and country and between September 15, 2022 and September 15, 2023 he played a mammoth 6,666 minutes. That is a result of him playing relentlessly in the Premier League and Europa League for United whilst also being a regular for Portugal.

Beckham director explains Qatar decision

The director of David Beckham’s documentary has insisted that his views on Qatar felt ‘too dated’ to be included in the series… despite his ongoing £125million deal with the Middle East state.

The documentary is now streaming on Netflix and follows the star’s life from his breakthrough at Manchester United to superstardom at Real Madrigal and the end of his career at LA Galaxy. A series of candid interviews are the basis for the show, mixed in with footage from the time.

Man Utd’s Onana decision questioned

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has questioned United’s decision to replace his compatriot David de Gea with Andre Onana.

“What you have to remember is when David de Gea first signed for Manchester United, he didn’t start well either, and then he became a legend of the club,” the Spaniard told Grosvenor Sport. “However, I don’t know how you can get rid of de Gea for free to sign Andre Onana. I loved David de Gea, he’s a good goalkeeper and he won the Golden Glove last season, so letting him go was strange.

“Onana was really good for Inter Milan last season, but he’s come to Manchester United and he’s under more pressure and it’s a new country, so I think he needs to adapt. I don’t know what went on inside between de Gea and Manchester United, because I don’t know how they got rid of him for free. I’m actually happy they got rid of him because I like to see United losing, but I loved de Gea as a goalkeeper for the club.”

Inter fans to target former Man Utd man Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has been warned he’ll get a noisy welcome when he returns to Inter Milan at the end of this month.

But despite previously helping the club to the Serie A title and a Champions League final, the striker won’t be preparing himself for an affectionate round of applause. Instead, fans of the Nerazzurri will make their feelings on the Belgian striker clear following his acrimonious departure from the club this summer.

Branthwaite a target amid defensive concerns

Manchester United have an eye on Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and could even swoop for the centre-back in January.

That’s according to The Mail, who report that Branthwaite impressed United during a loan spell at PSV last season.

United’s defensive search comes after the discovery that Lisandro Martinez could miss three months following surgery.

Eriksen’s reunion

Christian Eriksen will be up against old team-mates again this weekend as Manchester United face Brentford.

The midfielder finished the 2021-22 season with the Bees, having left previous club Inter Milan due to Italian rules relating to the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator he had fitted after a cardiac arrest in 2021.

He played 11 times for Brentford, scoring once, before joining United in Erik ten Hag’s first transfer window.

Garnacho becomes a father

United forward Alejandro Garnacho has welcomed a son, Enzo, with partner Eva Garcia.

‘Enzo Garnacho García 04/10/23,’ the caption in their jointread, along with a photo of the couple and their newborn baby.

The child was born at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester, with several of Garnacho’s team-mates – including summer signings Rasmus Hojlund and Sofyan Amrabat – sending their congratulations.

Ten Hag’s job ‘secure’ for now

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is not at immediate risk if losing his job, according to The Guardian.

This is despite United losing six of 10 games this season in all competitions, including both Champions League group games so far.

The club are still believed to consider Ten Hag the right man to lead the club forward in the long-term, and injury issues have been acknowledged.

Decisions for Brentford

Saturday’s match against Brentford is a huge one as Erik ten Hag looks to get his team back on course.

Rasmus Hojlund’s goals were a rare bright spot against Galatasaray on Tuesday and he can be expected to lead the line, but the manager will have big calls to make elsewhere.

Let us know who you think should start on Saturday, either in the comments section or on Twitter @MirrorFootball.

Ten Hag scared to criticise stars

Erik ten Hag is worried the mental fragility of his Manchester United squad means he can’t go in too hard on players amid their latest struggles.

Ten Hag’s side have endured a torrid start to the season both domestically and in Europe.

Nine points from seven league games represents their worst return at this stage in more than 30 years, while Tuesday night’s defeat to Galatasaray leaves United with no points from their first two Champions League outings.

Old Trafford snubbed for Euro 28

With the news that the UK and Ireland will host Euro 2028, attention has turned to the venues where the tournament’s matches will take place.

Rival bidders Turkey have pulled out of their bid for the tournament, instead turning their attention to a joint bid with Italy for the 2032 edition. This leaves the UK and Ireland bid as the only one in contention, though it has not formally been confirmed as the winner.

Back in April, when full details of the bid were announced, a list of 10 host stadiums was included. The list includes Wembley Stadium, which held the Euro 2020 final when the tournament was spread across the continent, but there is no place for Old Trafford or Anfield.

ICYMI: Ratcliffe’s ‘clauses’ upper hand

Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to attach clauses which would see him secure long-term ownership of Manchester United should he initially acquire a minority stake in the club.

Founder and chief executive of the petrochemical company, INEOS, Ratcliffe hopes to break the deadlock in United’s 11-month sale saga by being more open-minded in his approach than rival bidder Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani. Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim is at this stage unwilling to compromise on his proposal of an immediate full takeover, while Ratcliffe’s team are considering purchasing a 25 per cent stake with an established route to taking majority control later down the line.

Galatasaray boss explains Casemiro plan

Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk admits he told his players to target Casemiro during their shock win over Manchester United.

The Turkish side landed a memorable success at Old Trafford as they twice came from behind to eventually pick up the three points. United’s struggles continued in the Champions League as they lost at home for the second time in four days with Casemiro’s difficulties summing up his side’s season thus far.

United could face Hojbjerg competition

Juventus have been linked with out-of-favour Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was tipped to join Manchester United over the summer.

Erik ten Hag worked with the Danish midfielder at Bayern Munich and considered bringing him to Old Trafford before signing Sofyan Amrabat on transfer deadline day.

La Dazzetta dello Sport claim that Juve are keen on a move for Hojbjerg, 28, who’d be available for around £30million after struggling to gain the trust of new manager Ange Postecoglou.

Lindelof attracting elite interest

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof is being monitored by a host of clubs in Europe, including Italian giants Juventus.

Reports from the continent state that Juve, along with a number of Spanish sides, are interested in signing the Sweden captain.

Lindelof, 29, is out of contract next summer and has become Erik ten Hag’s third-choice centre-back.

ICYMI: Ratcliffe lines up transfer chief

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has identified Paul Mitchell as a candidate to become Manchester United’s transfer chief, if he completes his takeover of the club.

Ratcliffe, the billionaire chairman of chemical giant INEOS, has been battling Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani for control of the Red Devils. The current owners, the Glazers, are still yet to make a decision on which bid to accept, with neither matching their asking price.

The Englishman has now attempted to break the deadlock by changing his offer, with Ratcliffe instead pursuing a minority ownership of United. And he is moving his plans further forward by mapping out how the club’s football structure may look if his bid is accepted.

United in battle for MLS wonderkid

Manchester United are among several European clubs who are eyeing a move for American teenager Julian Hall, the Evening Standard report.

Hall, 15, made his first-team debut for New York Red Bulls aged last week, becoming the second-youngest ever player to feature in Major League Soccer.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the winger’s development.

ICYMI: Scholes slams “lazy and weak” duo

Paul Scholes slammed Raphael Varane and centre-back partner Victor Lindelof for being “lazy and weak” as Manchester United suffered a calamitous 3-2 loss at home to Galatasaray.

United continued their losing start to the Champions League group stage at Old Trafford on Tuesday, despite taking the lead twice through new striker Rasmus Hojlund. While Varane and Lindelof weren’t the only players who Scholes berated, the defensive duo did feel the brunt of his anger post-match.

The Red Devils legend told TNT Sports: “[Sofyan] Amrabat isn’t a left-back obviously but he leaves things so wide open. Lindelof and Varane were so lazy, so weak and we all know what the goalkeeper [Andre Onana] did as well.”

FULL STORY: Ratcliffe’s plan for full takeover using clauses

United announced in November 2022 that, in relation to the club’s ownership, the board would be “exploring strategic alternatives, including a sale,” but so far the Glazer family have refused to sell. Now, according to the Telegraph, the sale process remains in “good health” and the Glazers are still looking to seal “the right transaction,” holding multi-layered discussions with interested parties including INEOS.

ICYMI: Hojlund makes “embarrassing” admission

Rasmus Hojlund has admitted that Manchester United are in “crisis” following their latest humiliating defeat.

United lost to Galatasaray on Tuesday night, the first time they have failed to claim a point from their opening two Champions League games in the competition’s history. Hojlund scored twice, with the hosts going ahead after both of his goals.

But it was the Turkish side who were celebrating their first win of this year’s group stages, plunging United into further trouble. It appears the worsening state of the club has not been lost on the first-team squad, with Hojlund insisting the team know they need to improve.

Neville baffled by Klopp’s comments

Gary Neville believes Jurgen Klopp has inadvertently transformed Liverpool from the wronged party to the villains by saying that, if it was up to him, his side would get a replay against Tottenham.

Klopp has poured more petrol on the flames of debate surrounding the VAR mishap by saying he’d like the game be replayed. Liverpoollost 2-1 to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday after Luis Diaz’s opening goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

The PGMOL has apologised for the error by its VAR officials and has released the audio from the decision which shows how Darren England made the mistake. Speaking on Wednesday in a press conference ahead of a Europa League game against Union Saint-Gilloise, Klopp called the mistake “unprecedented” and said it therefore warranted a replay.

Solskjaer reunites with Rooney in DC

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer jetted into the US ahead of a trip to D.C. United’s training base as Wayne Rooney’s contract stand-off continues to rumble on.

The Norwegian coach has been out of work since his sacking at Old Trafford back in November 2021 after two years at the helm, including as caretaker. His trip stateside came as Rooney was preparing his team for their upcoming match against MLS rivals Austin FC.

Of course, the former forward pair spent time together during their playing careers with the Red Devils, with Rooney having signed from Everton in 2004. Solskjaer, who had already secured legendary status at the club by this point, would win the Premier League with the boy wonder in 2007, before retiring.

EXCLUSIVE: Rashford’s place under threat

Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United place is under threat amid concerns over his ongoing loss of form.

United boss Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure after six defeats from 10 games this season, making it the club’s worst start to a campaign for 37 years. Rashford is symptomatic of United’s malaise, with at least one member of Ten Hag’s coaching staff understood to have expressed concerns over his body language and decision-making.

Although Rashford provided the assist for Rasmus Hojlund’s opener in United’s 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday, the forward was guilty of a glaring error later in the game. With the score 1-1 early in the second half, Rashford contrived to waste a chance to present Bruno Fernandes with an open goal, a mistake that infuriated United fans.

Ratcliffe could still complete takeover

Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains hopeful that he’ll be able to complete a full takeover of Manchester United should he and INEOS initally acquire a minority stake worth 25 per cent.

According to the Telegraph, Ratcliffe and INEOS believe that there are ‘more ways than one to skin a cat’ in regards to taking majority control of United in the race to beat Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Neville criticises Klopp for replay call

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has slammed Jurgen Klopp for saying the Tottenham v Liverpool clash should be replayed.

United launch investigation into Old Trafford fiasco

Manchester United are investigating how at least 1,000 tickets in the home end of their Champions League clash against Galatasaray were used by away supporters, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Supporters of the Turkish club were seen seated together in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand.

Odds cut on Ten Hag to be sacked

After another defeat for Manchester United, Erik ten Hag is now just 3/1 to be sacked as early as this month.

Neil Roarty, spokesperson for bettingsites.co.uk, said: “After last night’s Champions League defeat to Galatasaray, the pressure on Erik ten Hag is ramping up and he now appears to be in trouble, with the Dutchman having presided over six defeats from the club’s opening 10 games of the season.

“After such a disastrous start, including losing their opening two Champions League games for the first time in their history, the odds for the Red Devils to sack Ten Hag this month have shortened to just 3/1, with a Manchester derby at the end of October currently looking rather ominous.”

He’s 6/4 to be gone by the end of December, and 4/6 to be dismissed by the end of the 2023/24 camapign.

Silvestre has high praise for Hojlund

Former Manchester United player Mikael Silvestre has been encouraged by Rasmus Hojlund after the striker’s two goals against Galatasaray.

“I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Højlund so far,” he told bettingexpert.com. “Full of energy, pressing, good in transition, and he has a presence

“He’s trying to find his partners, link up play, to understand the movement of everybody around him and ask to be available to his teammates. Good start for him. He scored a very No. 9 goal against Bayern Munich. Not much time to control the ball but he was there, combining with Rashford.”

Beckham makes Real Madrid admission

Man United could do with a young David Beckham at their disposal right now.

And now the iconic midfielder has insisted he never wanted to leave the club for Real Madrid in 2003: “I didn’t want to leave Manchester United at the time,” he told the Overlap. “We just won the league again, but all of a sudden I got a phone call to be told that United had agreed a deal and that was the end of it.”

Casemiro’s red card stat

Casemiro was sent off in the incident that led to the Galatasaray penalty on Tuesday night, prompting an unwanted statistic fotr the Brazilian midfielder.

In 336 appearances at previous club Real Madrid, he was only dismissed twice. In just 61 games for United, he’s now picked up three red cards already.

Ratcliffe steps up plans by identifying new transfer chief

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has identified Paul Mitchell as a candidate to become Manchester United’s transfer chief, if he completes his takeover of the club.

According to CBS Sports, he is being ‘considered’ to take over at Old Trafford if Ratcliffe’s bid is accepted.

Odds slashed on De Gea return

Leading bookmaker Coral makes Manchester United 10-1 to re-sign David De Gea before the end of the January transfer window, as goalkeeper Andre Onana’s struggles continue at Old Trafford.

“David De Gea has yet to find another club since leaving Old Trafford, and with Andre Onana continuing to struggle since he arrived from Inter Milan, we have taken bets on the Reds re-signing their former ‘keeper to add some depth to the position,” said Coral’s John Hill.

Man Utd disasters

Manchester United’s crisis shows no sign of easing, with Tuesday’s defeat to Galatasaray their fourth loss in their opening seven games of the season.

It is their worst-ever start in the Premier League, their worst-ever start in the Champions League and leaves Erik ten Hag with questions to answer. The Dutchman’s team is falling apart, with weaknesses all over the pitch, which were brutally exposed on Tuesday.

Though United twice went ahead at Old Trafford, they collapsed to sink to the bottom of Group A, the only side without a point. Mirror Football has broken down what went wrong for the Red Devils in their latest humiliating defeat.

Clichy on Ten Hag

Gael Clichy has admitted that Erik ten Hag needs patience to turn Manchester United’s fortunes around, following the 3-2 defeat against Galatasaray.

He told Genting Casino: “Football has evolved so much that, and players have changed – they’re demanding sponsors, media, fans, and so much more. It’s a different game now. ‘Process’ is more than just a word in football – you need to have a clear vision of what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. City and Toulouse are good examples of how to do that.

“Arsenal have managed it over the last four years by sticking with Arteta even when it would have been fair to sack him, but they’ve stuck with their plan and now they’re reaping the rewards.

“Football managers now have an average of eight months in a job and nobody can achieve anything in a period that short.

“Time has to be given to Erik ten Hag. It’s impossible to follow Ferguson, but if you look at what he did, you can make an argument that it is more of a personal legacy. There perhaps wasn’t the foundation for the club to go on and be successful again.'”

Keane on Beckham exit

Roy Keane believes David Beckham’s exit from Manchester United was ‘not good’ for the dressing room after Sir Alex Ferguson sanctioned his departure.

Delivering his thoughts to Beckham on his exit, Keane said on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet: “Power and control – that’s how he managed. You were getting older, we were all getting older, and people were getting married and having kids – the manager certainly didn’t like not having that control over the players.

“Whether it be the agency, your haircut, or where you were living – I have no doubt that he was getting fed up with it, losing that control over the players.

“I don’t know if it was the best for Manchester United. It ended up being brilliant for you, living in a new country and trying something else, but I certainly don’t think it was good for the dressing room.

“I’d say the same for when Paul Ince and the other lads left – when players go, you do think there is no logical reason for a player to leave at that time.”

Hojlund on Man Utd “crisis”

Rasmus Hojlund has admitted that Manchester United are in “crisis” following their latest humiliating defeat.

It appears the worsening state of the club has not been lost on the first-team squad, with Hojlund insisting the team know they need to improve.

“It’s hard to tell. I think we need to build a better togetherness and to build this confidence in the group again. Right now we need to improve together and stick together, that’s the only way we can get out of this crisis,” the striker told CBS Sports.

“You can say so [a lack of confidence]. It’s about being proud and fighting for the badge. We need to deliver more and deliver more to our fans and give more back to the club.”

Ten Hag on Onana

Erik ten Hag believes Andre Onana will “bounce back” after making a costly mistake during Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 defeat against Galatasaray on Tuesday.

Onana gifted Galatasaray a chance as his pass was intercepted by Dries Mertens, who raced into the box. Casemiro came in from behind and fouled the Belgium forward, handing the visitors a penalty. To make matters worse, Casemiro was sent off as United had to play the closing stages with 10 men.

Although Mauro Icardi missed from the spot, the Argentine made amends by scoring the winner in the 81st minute to hand Galatasaray all three points. After the game, Ten Hag was quizzed on Onana’s error and insisted he can become one of the best in the world, despite his latest mistake.

Ten Hag said: “We are happy with our goalkeeping group, definitely with Andre, and Andre was in one semi-finals of the Champions League, last season he was in a final of the Champions League, he has the capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“He showed that and he will do. We have already seen in games his great capabilities, also his personality after he made a mistake. He will bounce back and I’m sure he will do in the coming games as well.”

Gore’s Man Utd reminder

Dan Gore has once again reminded Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag that there are gems in the club’s academy, even as his first-team falls apart.

But while the senior team were falling to a humiliating 3-2 loss against Galatasaray, their junior side were surging to a comfortable win over the same opposition. Gore captained United’s side in their 3-0 win in the UEFA Youth League, playing all 90 minutes.

He was also fouled for the penalty from which Omari Forson put United ahead with 24 minutes to go. Forson would score his second of the day with four minutes remaining, after Ethan Williams had put United two goals up.Q@

Scholes on “unfit” Varane

After the game, Scholes pointed out Varane’s role in the United side and claimed he is concerned about how “unfit” the France international is looking at the moment. The ex-Real Madrid defender has started in each of the Red Devils’ last three matches following his return from injury.

“I do worry about Varane a bit,” Scholes told TNT Sports. “I know he’s been one of the very best defenders around, just like Rio was, in that same like at Real Madrid, but I just feel like his legs are looking a little bit sluggish. He’s a bit unfit, and I’d be really worried about him.”
