Liverpool chief Richard Hughes faces second nightmare as star could follow Salah to exit
Liverpool will welcome incoming sporting director Richard Hughes to Anfield in the summer.
Liverpool star Luis Diaz reportedly finds himself at a ‘crossroads’ this summer
Incoming Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has had a difficult first summer made even harder with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly monitoring Luis Diaz’s uncertain Anfield future. Diaz is yet to extend his contract beyond 2027 and is claimed to face a ‘crossroads’ this year.
The Colombian has been a huge success since arriving on Merseyside from Porto in January 2022. But he has not signed fresh terms since agreeing a five-and-a-half-year contract to sign for the Reds that year.
Liverpool are reportedly keen for Diaz to sign a new contract that would see the 27-year-old commit his long-term future to Anfield. His situation is unusual for a player who has enjoyed success in his first two years at the club.
Talks over Diaz’s future could take place during the summer months. He is reported to have interest from PSG and Barcelona, although the Spanish giants’s financial issues may prevent a move to Catalonia.

Richard Hughes is walking into a difficult summer at Liverpool
According to the Telegraph, Liverpool and Diaz are at a ‘crossroads’ over whether to extend his contract or sell him. A departure this summer will see the Reds maximise the fee they can receive for the attacker.
It is claimed that Diaz’s agent, Raul Costa, has visited the United Kingdom this year to visit his client. Interestingly, among Costa’s clientele is Ruben Amorim, the Sporting CP head coach who is strongly linked with the Anfield hot seat.
Diaz will still be contracted to Liverpool for three years but selling him further down the line will see his valuation significantly decrease, both due to his age and the lack of time remaining on his deal. The Reds are believed to value him at around £75million.
Liverpool will welcome new sporting chief Hughes to Anfield this summer, working under FSG’s CEO of Football Michael Edwards. The latter has returned to Liverpool two years after leaving the club.
Hughes is already braced for a difficult summer, even without factoring in a decision over Diaz’s future. The former Bournemouth sporting director will oversee the new manager’s start to life at Anfield and will be key in deciding the future of Mohamed Salah.
Salah is likely to receive interest from Saudi Arabia again this summer. He will have just a year remaining on his contract, giving him more power over where he plays his football next season than he did 12 months ago.
That will give Hughes plenty of work to do in what could be an extremely challenging few months.
