Jurgen Klopp names the four Liverpool players who looked good in Manchester City’s defeat

Jürgen Klopp has admitted that too many of his players were performing poorly for Liverpool to have any chance of winning against Manchester City on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah pushed the Reds ahead in the first half at the Etihad, only for Julian Alvarez to equalize just before the half-hour mark. Second-half goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish then secured a comfortable 4–1 victory for City.

And speaking after the match, Klopp revealed that he believes only four of his players have put in performances that could be considered close to “okay”.

“You know, you don’t know 100% whether this is how the team started or the players started like this or whatever,” the Liverpool manager said after the final whistle. “If you look at the game, maybe we had four performances that were okay.

“The two midfielders of Hendo (Jordan Henderson) and Fab (Fabinho) worked a lot. They tried to fill in the gaps. Cody (Gakpo), especially in possession, and of course Ali (Alisson Becker).

“Of course, it’s very difficult. If you want to get anything out of it, you have to play with 11 players. 14 or 15 players must be in top form. Again, that was not the case. »

The loss at the Etihad, coupled with results elsewhere later in the afternoon, leaves the Reds in eighth place and still seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who travel to Everton on Monday.

Fifth-placed Newcastle United have already hosted third-placed Manchester United. A win for the Magpies would put them third ahead of Spurs and Man United. Liverpool hit a new low as ex-Man City boss sneered behind the scenes after dismal defeat

Agents of ‘incredible’ players now excited about big Liverpool transfer amid Van Dijk confrontation

Liverpool are interested in Napoli defender Kim Min-jae and the player’s representatives also seem enthusiastic.

The Reds could be in the market for a new centre-back this summer.

Lefty options have been strongly linked in recent weeks, such as Josko Gvardiol, Evan Ndicka and Max Kilman.

However, Liverpool could set their sights on another right foot and reportedly go after Napoli star Kim.

This is according to a report from Foot Mercato, which suggests Liverpool are keen to lure Kim to Anfield. Kim’s reps are said to be interested in a money transfer to Liverpool this summer.

However, Kim wants to stay with Napoli for at least one more season which means the Reds are yet to face a battle.

Napoli want to extend Kim’s contract and increase his release clause to a whopping €90m.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen were the focus of much of Napoli’s Serie A campaign as they won the title.

However, defender Kim has been just as important since he moved from Fenerbahce last summer. Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti has called Kim “incredible” and the 26-year-old has been an absolute monster at the heart of Napoli’s defence.

It was Kalidou Koulibaly’s job for many years, but Napoli fans probably don’t even remember the Senegalese star with Kim shining so bright.

Indeed, 90Min reported Liverpool’s interest in signing Kim in July 2020, while calling him ‘South Korean Virgil van Dijk’.

It was bold when Kim played for Chinese team Beijing Guoan, but he certainly lived up to the comparison.

Liverpool could now link Kim and Van Dijk – but they have to convince the Napoli star first. In other news: Old footage from 2003 shows Mikel Arteta and Edu clash in Arsenal 3-0 Rangers

Jurgen Klopp reveals pessimistic assessment of Liverpool’s first four chances

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted it will be difficult for his side to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season if they continue to play so poorly.

The Reds suffered a 4-1 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, playing passivity and a lack of aggression at the Etihad Stadium.

After a draw by Brighton and Brentford earlier in the day, Liverpool dropped to eighth and are now seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Klopp was asked about Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League after the match, but he scoffed at such talk.

“Ugh. Top four? Come on. We can not. I strongly believe that if you are good, you should win football matches,” he told talkSPORT.

“If you play well I get angry and you don’t win, the decisions go against you, blah blah blah…

“But how do you win a football match like this today if you play well for 45 minutes and badly for the other 45 minutes? “You can’t win a game of football. So it has nothing to do with the top four prospects. We have to make sure we have some consistency.”

He added: “Very frustrating. What can I say. I wouldn’t say the first half was outstanding, but it was a game we’ve seen here before against City. “City have more dominance, City have more possession, but we are super aggressive and super difficult to defend.

“Maybe we keep the ball, then control the game from our side. It’s difficult for City to defend, so we have good spells with the ball.”

The run-up doesn’t get much easier for Liverpool. They travel to Chelsea on Tuesday – who, frankly, are also pretty shaken up – before facing leaders Arsenal next weekend at Anfield.

Klopp’s men will then get eight days rest before heading to Leeds to face two more relegation fighters in Nottingham Forest and West Ham. The Reds end April with a thrilling game against top four rivals Tottenham
