Man Utd’s hopes of keeping Marcel Sabitzer dealt major blow by Bayern Munich
Man Utd’s hopes of keeping Marcel Sabitzer have been hit hard by Bayern Munich
According to sources at 90min, Manchester United may refrain from signing Marcel Sabitzer permanently due to Bayern Munich’s asking price.
The Austria international proved a surprise target for the Red Devils at the end of January, with the six-month loan deal completed on the final day of the winter transfer window.
Sabitzer’s versatility has benefited Man Utd in the second half of the 2022/23 season and he has become a valuable member of the team.
90min reported in April that Erik ten Hag wanted to keep the 29-year-old as he was impressed with him during his short tenure at Old Trafford.
However, 90min are aware that Man Utd and Bayern’s assessments of Sabitzer differ significantly and a permanent transfer could fall through. Man Utd were hoping to secure a deal for around £10m, with 90 Minutes earlier reported that the German champions would demand a fee similar to the £13.7m paid to RB Leipzig for him in 2021. But since then Bayern have changed positions and are now seeking an amount in excess of £20m.
Ten Hag remain keen to keep the midfielder at the club but have accepted that the money set aside for this deal could be better spent elsewhere, while Sabitzer hoped a transfer could be completed and expected it to go through.
Man Utd remain in the market for a midfielder, with 90 Minutes recently signaling their interest in Mason Mount. The England international will sit down with Chelsea this week to discuss his future at Stamford Bridge. Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot, who was close to signing for Man Utd last summer, remains a target. His contract with Turin expires at the end of June, although negotiations are underway for a new deal.
