Manchester United takeover ‘circus’ must end, says ex-Reds defender
In November 2022, Manchester United owners, the Glazers, announced their intention to seek new investment opportunities
Former Manchester United captain Patrice Evra has urged the Glazers to choose their preferred acquisition bidder ahead of the start of the 2023/24 season.
United owners announced in November 2022 that they were looking to invest more in the club. At this point, that meant no options were on the table, including an outright sell.
Since then, the redemption process has become a long affair. Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe are the two favorites to buy the Reds. Reports this month suggested Sheikh Jassim was at the helm, but his camp dismissed it as “pure speculation”. With United no closer to being sold, Ev told the Times he is losing patience with the board.
“How many months have we been talking about this agreement? Since November,” said the Frenchman. “I think it’s important for the fans, for the players and obviously for Erik ten Hag. He’s the right man [to be a manager].
“We don’t know who the new owner will be. We are already 20 miles from Manchester City. Now the question is can we stop this circus and find a solution and get the owner to come as soon as possible?” We have to find him now, before the season starts. When the season starts, it’s already too late.
“Do we know which player will arrive? Do we know which player will leave? It’s not fair to Erik ten Hag. He creates negative energy around the club. “The club was already protesting the Glazers when I signed in 2006 but we hid it because we were winning. I remember the green and yellow shirt and scarf already in the stadium and I asked Gary Neville what handwashing was .
“He told me that the fans weren’t happy with the owners. It happened 17 years ago. We’re talking about the same thing.” We have to end it if we want Manchester United to get back to where they belong.”
