Sofyan Amrabat could become signing number four this summer at Manchester United if the stars align and a deal gets done.

The Fiorentina midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer and could move if United require reinforcements in central midfield. Players would need to be moved out before that happens.

United have made three signings this summer so far in a satisfactory window for Erik ten Hag’s side. Mason Mount became the first acquisition when his capture from Chelsea for £55m was sealed.

Andre Onana has subsequently arrived from Inter Milan to fill the vacancy in the club’s goalkeeping department. He is due to be David de Gea’s replacement following the Spaniard’s departure this summer after 12 years at Old Trafford.

And Rasmus Hojlund’s move from Atalanta has been agreed after a £64m initial fee was reached with the Serie A side. The striker will be the centre-forward solution that United needed at the start of the summer, though the official announcement the deal has been completed could still take some time.

United could bring in Amrabat this summer yet, should players head out the door in that department. Speculation surrounds the future of both Fred and Scott McTominay and if one or more of them leave then Amrabat could be the solution.

The 26-year-old has spent the last three years in Serie A with Fiorentina and has also risen to prominence with the Morocco national team. He was part of the squad which finished fourth at the 2022 World Cup last winter in Qatar.

Morocco and Amrabat won many plaudits for their exploits in the Middle East, and from club and international manager. Spain’s Luis Enrique, now at Paris Sanit-Germain, hailed the midfielder as the player to have impressed him the most at the tournament.

Speaking on his Twitch stream, Enrique said: “The player who’s most impressed me in this World Cup is Amrabat. He’s having a hell of a World Cup.

“I don’t want a repeat of France-Croatia [in the final]. It’d be nice if Morocco wins.”

And ex-United boss Jose Mourinho, now at Roma, was clear about his admiration of Amrabat. Having seen the midfielder firsthand in Serie A, the former United manager labelled Amrabat as a “very good player”.

He said: “They [Morocco] have individuals, [Yassine] Bounou was an individual during the competition and in this game [against Portugal] was the same. [Sofyan] Amrabat, I know him from Italian football, very good player. So, they have players, a coach and an incredible spirit.”

Whether Amrabat does indeed make the move to Old Trafford before September 1 remains to be seen. But if he does, United have been given quite some references on the midfielder’s abilities.
